About Barmouth
I’ll never forget the drive to Aberdovey – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from Shrewsbury turned into a comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly beggars, rerouting us down a narrow lane that had us white-knuckling it past hedges tall enough to hide a double-decker bus. Then, just as we crested the hill with the River Dyfi sparkling below, the heavens opened. Rain hammered the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and my other half accused me of packing the entire contents of Tesco into the boot – which, fair play, wasn’t far off. We arrived looking like drowned rats, kids bickering in the back about who’d eaten the last Haribo.

But oh, pulling up to this detached coastal house? Instant magic. It’s the sort of place that screams family beach holiday without trying too hard – imaginatively kitted out with all the cosy bits you dream of after a soggy trek. We tumbled through the door, dripping puddles everywhere, and there it was: floor-to-ceiling windows framing the river mouth spilling into Cardigan Bay. The views hit like a warm hug. I stood there, carrier bags swinging from my elbows, grinning like an idiot while the kids immediately claimed the hot tub on the deck as their throne. “Mum, this is better than Disney!” my youngest declared, eyes wide at the waves crashing just beyond the garden.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant – sorry, I mean spot on. We barely unpacked before heading out to shake off the travel cobwebs. Aberdovey’s golden sandy beach is right there, a five-minute wander, perfect for building lopsided sandcastles that the tide cheekily flattened. The village buzzed with that proper seaside charm: we grabbed fish and chips from a no-nonsense café, the kind where the owner chats about the morning’s catch like you’re old mates. Pubs dotted about promised pints with estuary views, and the independent shops tempted with quirky Welsh woollies and fudge that didn’t last the afternoon.

That evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills, we fired up the hot tub. Bubbling away with the bay twinkling below, it felt like we’d stumbled into paradise. I had a quiet moment then, sipping tea (none of your fancy lattes here), reflecting on how these little escapes remind you what matters. Work stress? Forgotten. The arrival chaos? Worth every spluttered laugh. We spent the next days messing about on the water – the kids tried their hand at canoeing from the harbour, I pottered along the beach, and we even squeezed in a round at the links golf course, where my drives were more shanks than shots. Aberdovey’s got it all: sailing boats bobbing, windsurfers carving the waves, and cosy spots for a cream tea when legs turn to jelly.

If you’re after a proper family bolt-hole with creature comforts and endless outdoorsy fun, this is it. We left with sun-kissed noses and hearts full, already plotting a return. Who knew a bit of rain could lead to the best holiday ever?
