About Barmouth
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday cottage near Barmouth – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car loaded with beach gear, cool bags stuffed with picnic fodder, and our excitable spaniel, Monty, who was already whining for a walk. About halfway there, disaster struck: a sudden downpour hit, turning the A roads into slippy slides, and then the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly, rerouting us down a narrow lane that felt more like a sheep track. “Are we lost?” my other half asked, gripping the dashboard as we dodged a rogue lamb. I laughed it off, but inside I was cursing my optimism – why didn’t I print a backup map? By the time we spotted the sea glinting in the distance, we were all a bit frazzled, with sandy paws everywhere and a bag of crisps exploded across the boot.

Pulling up to this charming cottage overlooking Llandanwg beach in Llanaber was like a sigh of relief. Tucked away with off-road parking for three cars (a godsend after our parking panic), it welcomed us with open arms – and Monty got the nod as our well-behaved pet. From the outside, it’s got this cracking mix of traditional charm and modern vibes that just screams “cosy coastal escape”. We tumbled out, anticipation buzzing after all that chaos, and the first impressions? Pure magic. Stepping inside, the open-plan kitchen/dining area hit us like a warm hug – three sets of patio doors flung wide to a garden spilling out to jaw-dropping views of the sea and rolling fields. You could practically taste the salt air while rustling up a brew.

I stood there for a moment, kettle in hand, reflecting on how I’d been so wound up by the journey’s mishaps. Here we were, in this stylish spot with its blue-fitted kitchen that’s an absolute dream for knocking up fish and chips or a lazy brunch, and it made me chuckle at myself. Why rush when paradise is this close? We unpacked amid the laughter, Monty sniffing every corner, and cracked open a bottle of fizz to toast our arrival. That first evening, we wandered down to Llandanwg beach just steps away – a hidden gem with soft sands and dunes perfect for a gentle stroll at sunset. The kids (well, me and my mate’s lot) built epic sandcastles while we watched seals bob in the waves, the stress of the drive melting away like ice cream on a hot day.

Next morning, after a fry-up with those unbeatable sea views, we headed into nearby Barmouth for a mooch. The harbour’s buzzing with fishing boats, and we grabbed fresh crab from the stalls – proper tasty. A quick cycle along the coastal path towards the Mawddach estuary had us spotting oystercatchers and feeling properly at one with Snowdonia’s edges. Even a light shower couldn’t dampen it; we dashed back to the cottage, brewed tea, and watched the clouds part over the fields. It’s places like this that remind you holidays aren’t about flawless plans, but those unexpected joys – like turning arrival pandemonium into the best stories. We didn’t venture far – why would you, with Eyri’s trails tempting from the doorstep? Honestly, it was the perfect reset, mishaps and all. Can’t wait to go back.
