About Barmouth
I finally made it to Barmouth after what felt like the world's slowest drive from Shrewsbury. We'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting, but about halfway there, disaster struck – or rather, a flat tyre on the A470. Kneeling in the drizzle, swearing under my breath at the lug nuts (well, quietly, with kids in the car), I felt like a right numpty. Half an hour and a kind passing motorist later, we were back on track, and as the Snowdonia peaks came into view, that anticipation bubbled up again. Barmouth's that perfect coastal gem, isn't it? All sea breezes and sandy beaches, and I couldn't wait to flop into our holiday pad.

Pulling up to the quirky nautical-themed pod in nearby Llwyngwril – just a hop from Barmouth – my heart did a little flip. It looked even cosier than the pics, perched with sea views that stretched right out to Cardigan Bay. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bag of crisps, and just... breathed. After the tyre fiasco, it felt like the universe saying, "Slow down, mate."

And slow down we did. This holiday was all about doing bugger all, and it was bliss. Mornings kicked off lazy in the garden, that lush little haven with its sea-facing deck. I'd brew a pot of tea, settle into a lounger with a battered paperback – some daft crime thriller I'd been meaning to read for ages – and let the waves' rhythm wash over me. The kids pottered about, building pebble castles or chasing butterflies, but mostly, we all just lounged. No schedules, no rushing. One afternoon, I caught myself staring at a gull wheeling overhead, mesmerised, thinking, "When did I last do nothing this properly?"

Lunches were picnic-style from the garden table: cheese ploughman's from the local shop in Llwyngwril, washed down with cider. Then more reading, maybe a gentle wander down to the beach at low tide – Barmouth's vast sands are made for barefoot ambling, collecting shells without a care. Evenings? Cosy inside the pod, fairy lights twinkling, board games that dissolved into giggles, and early nights with the sound of the tide lapping. No big hikes up those nearby hills (tempting as they looked), no faffing about. Just pure, unadulterated loafing.

There was this one moment of gentle self-reflection, sprawled in the hammock as the sun dipped. I'd been grinding at work, always chasing the next thing, and here I was, utterly content with a book and a breeze. Who knew joy could be this simple? No Instagram poses, no FOMO – just us, the garden, and the sea doing its thing.

By the end of the week, I didn't want to leave. That flat tyre? Best mishap ever – it got us here to the joy of very little. If you're after a reset, find yourself a spot like this. You'll thank me later.
