laid back luxury, with a hot tub in the quiet hills beyond the towns of brecon and sennybridge. there are great days out to be had in the surrounding brecon beacons, from walking the highest south wales peak, pen y fan, to enjoying yummy meals in one of the many country pubs in the area, that's if you can tear yourself away from the bubbly tub. the area is very good for cycling with routes for both mountain bikes and road cyclists, with bike hire available in brecon and hay on wye. brecon has a small independent cinema too. sennybridge is the closest town, best for the basics, head to brecon for a proper welsh town, complete with cathedral, regimental museum, cinema and mountaineering shops. hay on wye is a favourite, with heaps of independent stores and cafes. explore the popular dan yr ogof caves nearby, or big pit for a cultural adventure, both of which are a great family day out. leisure facilities: hot tub. outdoor play barn: with table tennis and pool table. shared play facilities: children’s play frame with slide.

About Brecon Beacons
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday cottage in the Brecon Beacons – a proper Welsh adventure that started with me taking a wrong turn just past Abergavenny. Sat nav lost its marbles in the hills, and suddenly we were on some narrow lane with sheep eyeing us like we’d gatecrashed their party. The other half was fuming, but I laughed it off, promising epic views ahead. And blimey, as we crested that final ridge beyond Sennybridge, there it was: our laid-back luxury bolthole nestled in the quiet hills, hot tub steaming invitingly under the vast sky. First impressions? Magic. We practically skipped through the door, bags dumped, hearts lifted.

It’s the sort of place that whispers “relax” from the off – think plush sofas for sinking into, a kitchen begging for lazy fry-ups, and that hot tub calling your name after a day out. We were a family couple on a chilled break, no kids in tow this time, just us two rediscovering that spark amid cottage life chaos. First evening, we cracked open a bottle of plonk, bubbles fizzing in the tub while the sun dipped behind the Beacons. Pure bliss, though I did nearly slip on the wet decking – classic me, turning luxury into a comedy sketch.

Next morning, anticipation bubbled as we plotted our days. Sennybridge is just down the road for basics like milk and papers, but we headed to Brecon for the real deal: wandered the cathedral, poked around the regimental museum, and grabbed pasties from a mountaineering shop that doubled as a café. Loved the indie cinema there too – caught a matinee, feet up like locals. Hay on Wye’s a short hop, all quirky bookshops and ace cafés; we spent hours browsing, emerging with armfuls of second-hand novels and cake crumbs down our fronts.

Pen y Fan was our big walk – highest peak in South Wales, and what a slog up those steep paths, rewarded with views that make you feel tiny and alive. We puffed back down giggling about my “shortcuts” that weren’t. Evenings meant country pub grub: hearty lamb casseroles and real ales at a cosy spot near Brecon, though tearing ourselves from the hot tub was the real battle. Cycling tempted us too – road routes winding through valleys, or mountain bike trails for the brave. Bike hire’s easy in Brecon or Hay.

The shared play barn was a unexpected gem – table tennis rallies turning competitive, pool shots going wildly awry. No kids, but it sparked that playful chaos we’d forgotten. One night, tub-side, I had a quiet moment of reflection: life’s mad rush back home feels miles away here. Amid the hills’ hush, it’s the simple stuff – shared laughs, steaming soak, a hand to hold – that recharges you. Brecon Beacons isn’t about grand plans; it’s cottage cosiness with a side of wild beauty. We left knackered but grinning, already plotting a return. If you fancy ditching the daily grind for hilltop heaven, this is your spot.
