About Brecon Beacons
Pulling up to the charming cottage on this working farm, surrounded by rolling fields, it was love at first sight. A cosy spot sleeping four with three bedrooms, perfect for us and the dog, who immediately claimed the rug by the door. It felt like stepping into a hug – peaceful, with Brecon just 2.5 miles away for any town cravings. But honestly, from that first evening, it was all about the food. We’d stocked up en route, but the real joy was pottering in the kitchen, pretending we were MasterChef contestants. First night, I attempted a Welsh rarebit with local cheddar we’d nabbed from Brecon market that morning – thick, gooey toast smothered in melted glory, served with a crisp salad from the farm veg patch outside. Hubby raised an eyebrow at my “artistic” presentation (it looked more like a cheese landslide), but it tasted spot on, washed down with a bottle of Brains from the offy. We chuckled over how I’d nearly set off the smoke alarm grating the cheese too close to the hob – a gentle reminder that I’m better at eating than cooking. Next day, we wandered into Brecon’s market, buzzing with stalls piled high with fresh bread, artisan cheeses, and those fat, juicy leeks that scream Wales. I loaded up on smoked salmon, homemade pâté, and a slab of Bara Brith for pudding – couldn’t resist. Back at the cottage, lunch was a feast: ploughman’s with crusty rolls, sharp pickle, and that salmon, eaten on the patio watching sheep amble by. Afternoon, we ambled 0.5 miles to Cradoc Golf Club for a pint at their clubhouse – not golfers ourselves, but the views over the parkland were stunning, and their fish and chips hit the spot, crispy batter and mushy peas done just right. Evenings were pub heaven. The Griffin Inn in Brecon became our go-to, a short drive for lamb shank that fell off the bone, paired with local real ales. One night, I tried my hand at cawl – that hearty Welsh stew with lamb, leeks, and spuds from the market. It bubbled away nicely, though I overdid the salt (note to self: taste as you go, love). We devoured it with fresh bread, toasting to simple pleasures. Self-reflecting over dessert – a crumble from farm berries – I realised these stays recharge me more than any spa. No fancy restaurants needed; just good grub, local flavours, and a bit of kitchen faffing about. Sunday brunch was peak indulgence: full fry-up with Brecon bacon, black pudding, and eggs from a nearby farm stall. We lingered, reluctant to leave, already plotting our return for more market hauls and pub roasts. If you’re after a foodie rural escape, this corner of the Beacons delivers – mishaps, meltdowns, and all. |
