About Brecon Beacons
I’ll never forget the drive to our Brecon Beacons holiday cottage – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M4 turned into a comedy of errors thanks to my dodgy sat-nav. It kept insisting we take a “scenic route” through winding lanes that got narrower by the minute, and just as we were high-fiving ourselves for beating the traffic, we hit a flock of sheep blocking the road. There I was, reversing into a hedge while the farmer ambled over with a grin, muttering about city folk and their fancy cars. By the time we disentangled ourselves, we were all laughing – or was that hysteria? – and my other half was threatening to walk the last five miles.

Still, as we finally crested the hill and the cottage came into view, all that arrival chaos melted away. Nestled in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park with panoramic views across the valley, this stunningly luxurious spot is built like a classic timber lodge, all warm and inviting. It adjoins another cottage, perfect for our big family group, and the self-catering setup meant we could flop straight in without faffing about. Full disabled access too, which made everything dead easy for my mum. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight – that hot tub bubbling away on the deck like it was waiting just for us, and the valley stretching out below, all misty peaks and golden evening light. We cracked open a bottle of fizz right there on the terrace, toasting the fact we’d made it in one piece.

The anticipation had been building all week – visions of crisp Welsh air and proper downtime – and it delivered in spades. We wasted no time diving into the hot tub, muscles unknotting after the drive, while the kids whooped and splashed like it was a private spa. Dinner was a lazy self-catered affair: local sausages from the farm shop down the road, chucked on the barbecue with some spuds roasted in the Aga-style oven. Laughter echoed as we swapped stories of the sheep incident, and I caught myself thinking how rare it is to switch off like this – no emails, no deadlines, just us and the stars popping out over the Beacons.

Next morning, we wandered a short loop up to a nearby waterfall – Pen y Fan’s shadow looming in the distance, but we kept it gentle, clambering over rocks and breathing in that piney freshness. The cottage felt like our own little haven, pulling us back for elevenses and more tub time. Sure, I had a moment of gentle self-reflection staring out at the view: when did life get so hectic that a simple getaway feels like winning the lottery? But honestly, who cares – surrounded by family, steaming in the hot tub with a brew in hand, it was pure bliss. If you’re after a Brecon Beacons escape that hits reset, find yourself a spot like this. We’re already plotting a return, mishaps and all.
