About Brecon Beacons
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday farmhouse in the Brecon Beacons – it was one of those journeys that starts off promising but quickly turns into a comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car in Cardiff early Saturday morning, full of beans after a greasy fry-up, with the sat-nav confidently directing us towards that elevated spot overlooking the Honddu Valley. But oh no, about halfway there, just past the A470, the heavens opened. Proper Welsh rain, the kind that turns lanes into rivers. Then, disaster: a sheep decided to play chicken with our Fiesta right on a narrow bend. I swerved, heart in mouth, and ended up with the wing mirror kissing a hedge. “Brilliant,” I muttered to my other half, “we’ve not even arrived and we’re already decorating the countryside.”

By the time we crested the hill towards Breconshire, soaked and sheep-shaken, the anticipation was bubbling up despite the chaos. I’d been dreaming of this escape for weeks – no emails, just fresh air and proper peace. Pulling up to the farmhouse, though, it was even better than the photos. Perched high with those sweeping views down the valley, it felt like we’d stumbled into a postcard. The place had this cosy, lived-in charm, perfect for kicking back after a day out. We tumbled inside, dripping puddles everywhere, and straight away it won us over: wood burner ready to roar, telly for rainy afternoons, and a kitchen that screamed “cook a massive stew tonight.”

First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and cracked open a cuppa, gazing out at the rolling hills. The position was genius – close enough to Brecon’s high street for a cheeky pub lunch, but far enough to feel worlds away. That first evening, after drying off, we wandered a short loop from the door, past drystone walls and babbling streams. The air was crisp, alive with birdsong, and I couldn’t stop grinning. “This is it,” I thought, “proper holiday magic.”

Next morning, chaos forgotten, we headed into Brecon, just a quick six-mile spin. Parked up near the cathedral, grabbed pasties from one of those indie bakeries, then ambled along the canal towpath. It’s all so unpretentious there – hikers in wellies, dog-walkers waving hello. We even hired bikes for a gentle pootle towards the reservoirs, nothing too mad, just enough to feel alive. Back at the farmhouse, I had a quiet moment by the window, tea in hand, reflecting on how daft I’d been stressing work deadlines before we left. Out here, with the valley stretching out, it all seemed tiny. Who needs therapy when you’ve got this?

The stay flew by in a blur of short hikes up to Llangorse Lake – well, a gentle stroll really, with me huffing like an old steam train – and lazy suppers of local lamb. That initial mishap? It just made the whole thing funnier, a story to retell over pints. If you’re after a base that ticks every box for Beacons exploring, this is it. We’re already plotting a return, minus the sheep dodges.
