About Brecon Beacons
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot in the Brecon Beacons – a proper Welsh adventure that started with me taking a wrong turn just outside Abergavenny. Sat nav said one thing, my gut said another, and before I knew it, we were winding up a narrow lane that felt like it was leading to Narnia. Heart in mouth, reversing round a hairpin bend with sheep eyeing us suspiciously, we finally spotted the sign for Crickhowell below. What a relief – and what a view as we crested the hill. My mate Dave quipped, “If this is the mishap, sign me up for more holidays.”

Pulling up to this luxurious hillside retreat, I was buzzing with that proper arrival anticipation – you know, the bit where you imagine cosy evenings and epic sunsets. And blimey, it didn’t disappoint. Perched high with breathtaking panoramic views over charming Crickhowell, it’s spacious and beautifully finished, perfect for our little gang to flop out in style. We tumbled inside, bags dumped, and straight away it felt like home – but the posh kind, with room to breathe.

The joy of it all? Doing sod all, really. After that faff on the road, we were primed for lazy cottage days, and this place delivered in spades. Mornings kicked off with brews on the terrace, watching mist lift off the Beacons while the town twinkled way down below. No rush, no plans – just the garden calling us out. It’s a cracking spot, that garden, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, a couple of benches tucked away for maximum lounging. I’d crack open a book – some daft thriller I’d been meaning to read for months – and let hours slip by. Dave tried birdwatching with his phone app, but mostly he ended up dozing, book over his face. Proper comedy gold.

Afternoons blurred into siestas. We’d wander the garden paths, picking blackberries if we fancied (though I mostly ate them on the spot), then back to the sofas with flasks of tea. Sunsets were the highlight – painting the hills in pinks and golds, with Crickhowell’s rooftops glowing like a postcard. One evening, I caught myself just staring, mug gone cold, thinking how I never switch off at home. Work emails, kids’ schedules – it all felt a million miles away up here. Gentle nudge to meself: slow down more often, eh? No epiphany, just a quiet “yeah, this is nice.”

Evenings were pure indulgence – board games that descended into chaos (Monopoly arguments are timeless), or firing up the barbecue for local sausages from Crickhowell’s farm shop. No big hikes into the Beacons proper – we saved energy for gazing at them from afar. One rainy afternoon, we binge-watched rubbish telly, rain pattering on the windows like applause. Laughed about how we’d tell mates we’d “conquered the hills” without moving from the garden.

Leaving felt bittersweet, but those lazy days recharged us proper. If you’re after switching off in style, this hillside gem’s your spot. Pure bliss.
