About Brecon Beacons
I’ll never forget the drive to our little holiday spot in the Brecon Beacons – a proper faff from the start. We’d packed the car with enough tea bags and biscuits to last a siege, and set off from the M4 with me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. Halfway up some twisty lane near Sennybridge, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and directed us straight into a muddy farm track. Cue a mild panic, a three-point turn that took about 20, and us laughing like idiots as we backtracked. But honestly, that little mishap just built the anticipation – by the time we crested the hill into the Llanfihangel Nant Bran valley, I was buzzing to arrive.

Pulling up to this beautifully converted 17th-century granary, now a cosy cottage made for couples or small families, we were smitten straight away. Tucked on a working family farm in the heart of it all, with sheep ambling about and ponies poking their noses over the fence, it felt like stepping into a postcard. The views? Breathtaking – rolling hills stretching out, red kites wheeling lazily overhead. We dumped the bags and just stood there, grinning like fools, already forgetting the outside world.

The joy of it, though, wasn’t in dashing off to conquer peaks or ticking off trails – though you could, easy as anything, with endless rural walks right from the door. Nah, for us it was all about doing bugger all, and loving every minute. Lazy cottage days became our religion. Mornings started slow: I’d potter out to the garden with a cuppa, settling into a rickety chair under the apple trees, watching mist lift off the valley. The air was so crisp, it made you breathe deeper, properly fill your lungs. We’d linger over brekkie – proper fry-ups with local eggs from the farm – then flop back outside with books we’d been meaning to read for months.

Afternoons blurred into this blissful nothing. I’d stretch out on a blanket in the grass, half-dozing to the bleat of sheep and the odd pony whinny, while my other half flicked through a dog-eared thriller. No rush, no plans – just the sun warming your face, a gentle breeze rustling the hedges, and those kites putting on free aerial shows. One day, I caught myself staring at a cloud shaped like a wonky teapot, pondering how I never do this at home. Work emails? Dead to me. Chores? What chores? It was a gentle nudge, that moment of self-reflection – life’s too short not to slow down now and then, innit? We’d wander the garden paths at snail’s pace, picking blackberries (well, trying to; most ended up in our mouths), or just sit with a GandT as the light faded, chatting about nothing much.

Evenings were pure hygge: wood burner crackling (okay, we cheated with the gas one), board games that descended into giggles, and stargazing from the garden – the Beacons sky is ridiculous, no light pollution to spoil it. We left feeling utterly recharged, not from ticking boxes, but from the sheer bliss of switching off. If you fancy proper downtime in Wales’ finest, this is your spot. Proper magic.
