About Cardiff
I’ll never forget the drive down to Newport from the Midlands – we’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, but halfway there, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a scenic detour through some winding country lanes. Picture me, white-knuckled on the wheel, while my other half tutted and fiddled with her phone. “Trust technology to ruin a perfectly good road trip,” she laughed. Still, by the time we rolled into town, the sun was dipping low, and my heart was doing little flips of excitement. A cheeky stop for fish and chips sorted the grumps, and suddenly we were buzzing to see our stylish modern cottage tucked beside leafy Belle Vue Park.

Pulling up, we were gobsmacked – it was even better than the photos. This inviting little retreat, all clean lines and cosy vibes, screamed perfect base for a chilled-out couple’s break. Sleeping six but just right for us two (plenty of room for sprawling), it sat pretty much on the park’s doorstep, that Victorian gem where locals stroll with dogs and sip afternoon tea. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of Welsh red, and flopped on the sofa, listening to the birds chirp outside. Pure bliss after the road rage.

Next morning, we wandered hand-in-hand into Belle Vue Park, the air crisp and full of that fresh Welsh promise. It’s one of those places that feels timeless – couples like us ambling along paths lined with blooming rhododendrons, dodging enthusiastic spaniels. We grabbed a bench, shared a sneaky flask of coffee, and just soaked it in. No rush, no plans beyond lunch. Speaking of which, a 10-minute stroll took us to the heart of the city – Casnewydd, as the signs cheekily call it – buzzing with indie shops and ace eateries. We ducked into the covered market, weaving through 60-odd stalls piled high with fresh bread, cheeses, and handmade fudge. I couldn’t resist haggling for a bag of bara brith; my wife rolled her eyes but munched it happily anyway.

Afternoons blurred into gentle chaos – you know the sort, where cottage life throws curveballs like forgetting the milk and ending up on a mini-adventure to the corner shop, laughing all the way. We popped into the cathedral for a quiet moment, its stained glass glowing like something out of a fairy tale, then the museum and art gallery next door, where I got properly lost in some local history exhibits. Humour me here: I’m usually the one rushing about, but standing there amid paintings of old Newport docks, I had this gentle epiphany. Life’s too short for constant hustle; sometimes, you just need a park-side cottage to remind you to breathe.

Evenings were our favourite – firing up the hob for simple suppers (pasta with market veg, nothing fancy), then curling up with a film as rain pattered on the windows. One night, a cheeky fox wandered past, nose twitching at our leftovers – cue us giggling like kids. It was all about those small pleasures: the park’s dappled shade, market banter, and that warm glow of coming “home” to our little haven each day. Newport wrapped us up in its unpretentious charm, and honestly, we didn’t want to leave. If you’re after a relaxed reset with your favourite person, hunt down a spot like this. You won’t regret it.
