About Cardiff
I’ll never forget the drive down from the Midlands to Pontyclun – we’d packed the car to the gills with kids’ snacks and board games, dreaming of a proper Welsh getaway. But about halfway, disaster struck: the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent us looping around some back lane near Bridgend. We ended up in a muddy farm track, laughing hysterically as the wheels spun uselessly. A quick tow from a kindly local farmer (cheers, mate!) got us back on track, and by the time we pulled up, my anticipation was through the roof – this was going to be epic.

First impressions? Blimey, what a belter. It’s this cracking high-end holiday home tucked away in the lush hills of Pontyclun, Rhondda Cynon Taf, with its own waterfall trickling right by the entrance and space to park four cars off-road – perfect for our crew of eight. Stepping inside felt like a warm hug: that massive open-plan living space with a kitchen kitted out to the nines (oven, hob, microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher – the lot), a dining table for 12 where we demolished fish and chips that first night, and squidgy sofas in front of a Smart TV for bingeing Strictly reruns. It was pure bliss after the road drama.

The real magic, though, kicked off when we ditched the guidebooks and just wandered. Cardiff’s not far, but we were chuffed to stumble on these hidden gems by pure accident – the joy of getting properly lost. First day, we aimed for a quick dog walk and ended up at Coed y Mynydd, this off-the-beaten-track woodland trail just a stone’s throw from the house. Towering trees, babbling streams, and not a soul in sight – we picnicked by a forgotten pond, the kids splashing about like otters while I pretended to read a book. Pure accidental gold.

Next morning, faffing about with no real plan, we veered off down a narrow lane and found ourselves at the Creigiau local nature reserve – a secret little spot with wildflower meadows and butterfly-choked paths. It’s one of those places you’d never clock on a map, but we spent hours there, spotting kingfishers darting over the pond. Lunch was at a tiny farm shop café in nearby Llantrisant, where the Welsh cakes were so good I nearly proposed to the plate. Afternoon took us deeper into the woods behind the house, where a wrong turn led to an old packhorse bridge over a rushing stream – hidden history, fairy-tale vibes, and zero tourists. We played poohsticks for ages, chucking twigs and cheering like idiots.

Evenings back at the lodge were for regrouping around that epic table – homemade shepherd’s pie, Monopoly marathons till midnight. One night, after a particularly daft route home from Tyla Garw lake (another fluke find, all glassy waters and heron sightings), I sat on the sofa with a cuppa, reflecting on how these unplanned detours beat any itinerary. Us lot are usually glued to screens or schedules, but getting lost here stripped it all back – just family, nature, and a few daft laughs. Pontyclun’s got this knack for whispering its secrets if you let it. If you’re after a holiday where the best bits find you, this is the spot. We’re already plotting a return.
