About Conway
First impressions? Spot on. This cosy barn conversion sat tucked away in the hills near Llanrwst, all low-beamed charm and welcoming vibes, with views over the Conway Valley that had us dropping our bags and cracking open a beer on the patio before we’d even unpacked. It felt like our own little secret hideaway, perfect for plotting adventures without the tourist hordes. We weren’t here for the obvious stuff – Conway’s castle and walls are brilliant, sure, but we craved the hidden gems you only find by accident. First day, we set off for a wander around Llanrwst, just a couple of miles away, but took a wrong turn onto a bridleway that led us to this forgotten woollen mill by the river. No signs, no crowds – just the rush of water, old machinery humming in the breeze, and a chatty local who slipped us a tip about a tucked-away tearoom serving bara brith that tasted like it was baked by angels. Proper off-the-beaten-track magic. Next morning, aiming for Betws y Coed’s gentle strolls, we got gloriously lost on the back lanes and stumbled into the Gwydir Forest’s secret glades. Instead of the main paths, we followed a faint trail to a waterfall you could practically have to yourself – mist rising, ferns dripping, and not a soul in sight. We picnicked there, feet in the stream, laughing about how my dodgy sense of direction had turned into our best find yet. It got me reflecting, you know? In the rush of everyday life back home, I’m always charging from A to B, but getting lost here forced me to slow down, breathe, and actually notice the world. Bit of a lightbulb moment for a bloke who usually relies on Google Maps like it’s oxygen. That spirit carried us to more flukes: a riverside fishing spot near the RSPB reserve where we watched kingfishers dart like jewels (no rods needed, just binoculars and awe), and a detour that spat us out at the Welsh Food Centre’s back entrance for a sneaky tasting of local cheeses and honey mead. Even a “shortcut” to Conway’s harbour led to Britain’s Smallest House – we squeezed in, giggling at the absurdity, before mooching hidden alleys lined with indie shops selling Welsh crafts you won’t find online. Zip World and Surf Snowdonia were tempting, but those accidental discoveries – the quiet climbs with valley views unfolding like a private show, the harbour’s wee eateries dishing up fresh crab rolls – stole the show. Staying in that barn was the perfect base for it all, close enough to everything yet worlds away from the beaten path. If you fancy North Wales without the crowds, get yourself lost here. You won’t regret it. |
