About Conway
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday house near Betws-y-Coed in Conway – a proper Welsh adventure from the off. We’d piled into the car in Manchester, full of beans after a fry-up, with me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. Big mistake. Somewhere past Blaenau Ffestiniog, I took a “shortcut” that turned into a single-track lane twisting through misty hills. We ended up proper lost, bumping over potholes with sheep glaring at us like we’d gatecrashed their party. Half an hour later, after a three-point turn that nearly ended in a ditch, we spotted the signs for Pentrefoelas and breathed a sigh of relief. By then, I was buzzing with anticipation – Conway’s got that magic, doesn’t it? Mountains looming, rivers sparkling, promising hidden wonders just begging to be found.

Pulling up to the cosy detached house, my heart lifted. It was this welcoming stone cottage vibe, all nestled in lush woodland with a cheeky stream gurgling nearby – perfect for our family of four. First impressions? Spot on. Fresh linen smells, a telly bigger than our lounge at home, and a kitchen stocked with tea bags (priority number one). We dumped the bags and cracked open a brew, peering out at the garden backed by those majestic Snowdonia fringes. Little did we know, the real joy was in getting properly disoriented over the next few days.

We weren’t here for the tourist traps; nah, we stumbled on Conway’s best-kept secrets by accident, which is half the fun. First wander, we followed a faint path from the house that wasn’t on any map – turned out to be a cracking off-the-beaten-track trail to a hidden waterfall in the River Conway’s tributaries. Tucked behind a curtain of ferns, it was thundering down into a crystal pool, utterly deserted. We picnicked there, feet dangling in the icy water, laughing as the kids dared each other to jump in. Pure bliss, and not a soul in sight.

Next day, aiming for a gentle riverside stroll near Pentrefoelas, we veered off down a woodland track after a promising “public footpath” sign. Lost again! But what a find – a serene hilltop lake mirroring the pines, alive with dragonflies and the odd trout flashing silver. We sat for hours, skipping stones, feeling miles from civilisation. I had a proper moment there, sipping flask coffee, reflecting on how rushing through life back home robs you of this. Why chase Instagram spots when stumbling on your own private paradise hits different? Light bulb moment for this daft dad.

Even a cycle loop went awry – we missed a turn and ended up on a rugged path through lush valleys, discovering a tucked-away river pool ideal for wild swimming. Chilly as anything, but exhilarating, with kingfishers darting about. Back at the house each evening, we’d flop by the wood burner, muddy boots by the door, swapping tales of our “mishaps” that weren’t mishaps at all.

Conway near Betws-y-Coed is a wanderer’s dream – get lost, find gems. We left with maps forgotten, hearts full, already plotting the next daft detour. If you fancy ditching the crowds for accidental magic, this is your spot.
