About Conway
I’ll never forget the drive to Conway – well, Deganwy really – last month. We’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, kids buzzing in the back, and me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. Naturally, we took a wrong turn somewhere near Llandudno Junction, ending up on a narrow lane that twisted through sheep-dotted fields. “Are we lost already?” my wife laughed, as I reversed past a bewildered farmer. It was a right faff, but honestly, that little mishap set the tone for the whole trip – stumbling into hidden corners we’d never have found otherwise.

Pulling up to our ground floor apartment, I felt that proper holiday buzz, you know? Tucked away in the peaceful depths of Deganwy, it looked just the ticket – elegantly styled, perfect for us lot with its countryside wraparound vibe. Stepping inside, the open-plan sitting room hit us first: plush leather sofas begging us to flop down, and those French doors swinging open to a cracking patio that just warmed the cockles. Kitchen was spot on too, all neatly laid out for knocking up a fry-up, with a dining table tucked in the corner. Down the hall, the king-size bedroom was pure calm – mirrored wardrobes and tasteful wall art making it feel like a proper retreat. First impressions? Bang on.

But the real magic kicked off when we decided to wander without a plan. No tourist traps for us; we wanted those off-the-beaten-path spots you only find by getting properly lost. First afternoon, we followed a footpath from the patio that snaked behind the apartment, away from the main roads. It led us to this tucked-away cove along the Conway estuary – not on any map I’d seen. Pebbly beach, gentle waves lapping, and not a soul in sight. We picnicked there till sunset, kids skimming stones like pros. “This is what holidays are for,” I thought, chuckling at how my rubbish sense of direction had paid off.

Next day, another aimless ramble took us uphill through quiet lanes, past orchards heavy with apples. We stumbled on a hidden community garden – proper gem, with wildflowers, beehives, and benches overlooking the river. Locals nodded hello, sharing tales of the area over tea from a honesty box. Felt like we’d gatecrashed paradise. Even got lost proper-like on the way back, looping through woodland paths that spat us out near Deganwy’s castle ruins – not the big Conway one, but these lesser-known remnants, all ivy-cloaked and whispering history. Sat there with flasks, reflecting on how I’m always rushing life at home. Why not embrace the meander more?

Evenings were bliss – barbecues on the patio, watching bats flit over the fields. One night, a wrong turn on a dusk walk led to a secluded viewpoint, estuary glittering under the stars. No crowds, just us and the magic of chance discoveries. Deganwy’s full of these secrets if you let yourself get lost. We left buzzing, already plotting the next mishap-driven adventure. Proper tonic for the soul.
