About Conway
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot in Llanfairfechan – it was one of those classic family road trips where everything’s going swimmingly until it isn’t. We’d piled into the car in Manchester, kids buzzing with excitement about the seaside, me humming along to some dodgy 90s playlist, and the satnav promising we’d be there in under two hours. Then, about halfway, we hit a proper downpour, and I took a wrong turn onto one of those narrow Welsh lanes that twist like a drunk snake. Cue the wife yelling “Turn around!” while the little ones chant “Are we there yet?” from the back. We ended up in a muddy layby, laughing our heads off as I reversed into a hedge. Minor disaster averted, and suddenly the anticipation kicked in – Conway’s coast was calling, all salty air and promise of lazy days.

Pulling up to the place just as the rain cleared, I was gobsmacked. It’s this immaculately-presented two-storey penthouse apartment right on the front, staring out over the sea like it owns the view. Spacious, beautifully furnished, the sort of spot that screams perfect for families without trying too hard. We tumbled in, bags everywhere, and the first impressions? Pure magic. Panoramic views from half the rooms, including two bedrooms – you could wake up to waves crashing without even getting out of bed. Upstairs, there’s a bedroom with an en-suite and this raised bath at window-level; I had a soak that first evening, pint in hand (non-alcoholic for the kids’ sake), watching the sun dip over the bay. Downstairs, a double with sea views for us, a twin perfect for the nippers, and a high-spec shower room to hose off the sand.

The next few days were all about that relaxed family break vibe – simple pleasures mixed with the joyful chaos of cottage life. Mornings started with brekkie chaos: burnt toast, spilled juice, everyone fighting over the best view from the table. Then we’d wander down to Llanfairfechan’s pebble beach, just steps away, building lopsided sandcastles and skimmin’ stones till our arms ached. The kids loved paddling in the shallows, shriekin’ when the cold waves snuck up. Afternoons meant fish and chips from the local takeaway, eaten on the balcony with gulls circlin’ hopefully overhead – proper seaside stuff, grease and all.

We nipped over to nearby Penmaenmawr for a gentle stroll along the prom, ice creams drippin’ down chins, and one day we even tried our hand at crab fishing off the rocks with bits of bacon on string. Hilarious – I lost more bait than we caught, but the kids declared it the best day ever. Evenings were for board games that descended into giggles and minor squabbles, followed by collapsing on the sofa with the telly on low, sea breeze waftin’ through the windows.

Looking back, there was this gentle moment of self-reflection on the last night. Sat there with a cuppa, watchin’ the lights twinkle across the Menai Strait, I realised how these daft, messy holidays recharge us. No grand plans, just us lot muckin’ about in a cracking spot. Llanfairfechan’s got that unpretentious charm – close enough to Conway’s castle for a quick peek if you fancy, but we were too busy lovin’ our little bubble. Can’t wait to go back for more of that sweet seaside mayhem.
