We’d been on the road for nearly four hours when the sat-nav decided to play its little trick. One minute we were trundling happily along the A55, the next it cheerfully announced we’d arrived—right in the middle of a roundabout on the edge of Kinmel Bay. After a flustered loop and some good-natured bickering about whose fault it was, we finally spotted the neat row of holiday homes that make up Golden Sands. Number 17988 sat at the end, its pale render glowing in the late-afternoon sun and a little wooden sign swinging on the gate.

The first thing that hit me, once we’d wrestled the suitcases out of the boot, was the smell: salt and warm tarmac, the unmistakable scent of a Welsh seaside evening. Our key safe was exactly where the instructions promised, and inside everything felt reassuringly straightforward—two sofas that looked like they’d hosted plenty of rainy-day board games, a kitchen stocked with the essentials, and a little patio door that opened straight onto a strip of scrubby grass. Beyond that, the dunes rose in soft humps, and if you stood on tiptoe you could just glimpse the pale strip of beach.

We were both a bit sticky from the drive, so we left the unpacking for later and wandered the hundred yards or so to the shore. The tide was out, giving the sand that wide, rippled look that makes you want to kick your shoes off even though you know the water will be freezing. A few families were still dotted about with windbreaks, and the low chatter of children mixed with the occasional cry of gulls. It felt like the sort of place where nobody’s in a rush.

Back at the cottage the patio caught the last of the sun, so we made tea in mismatched mugs and sat outside watching the light slide off the sea. I found myself thinking how easy it is, after months of emails and early trains, to forget that “getting away” doesn’t have to mean exotic stamps in your passport. Sometimes it’s just a slightly-too-long drive, a dodgy roundabout, and the sudden realisation that your shoulders have dropped an inch without you noticing.

By the time we wandered back inside, the cottage already felt less like a stranger’s house and more like a borrowed front room. The kettle clicked off again, the curtains stirred in the breeze from the dunes, and somewhere down the lane a dog barked at nothing in particular. We hadn’t even unpacked the beach towels yet, but the weekend already felt like it was settling around us, comfortable and unhurried, just the way a proper Welsh beach holiday should.
