About Gower Peninsula
We'd been dreaming of a proper family getaway for ages, just me, my wife, our two lads and the dog, escaping the daily grind for some proper Welsh coast vibes. The drive down from the Midlands was meant to be a breeze, but oh no—about an hour in, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow B-road that had us crawling behind a tractor for what felt like miles. The kids were chanting "Are we there yet?" and the sat-nav was having a right old meltdown. Still, it added to the adventure, didn't it? By the time we crested the hill towards Llanrhidian, the sun was dipping low, casting this golden glow over the estuary, and my heart lifted. "This is it," I thought, anticipation bubbling up like we'd stumbled into a postcard.

Pulling up to the place on the outskirts of the village, we were gobsmacked. It's this cracking large detached home with a separate annexe, perfect for our big crew—sleeping 12 in the main house and six more in the annexe. Pet-friendly too, which had the dog wagging like mad. Those far-reaching views across Penclawdd Estuary and the salt marshes? Straight out the windows, like nature had rolled out the red carpet. First impressions were spot on: cosy, spacious, and just begging for us to kick off our shoes and make a mess.

We dumped the bags and legged it to the local pub in Llanrhidian, just a mile away—proper welcoming spot with a roaring fire and pints that hit the spot after the drive. Next morning, we wandered over to Welshmoor Common, barely 300 metres down the lane. It's this wild, ancient-feeling SSSI spot, dotted with those quirky Jacob sheep munching away. The lads chased butterflies while we picnicked, the air thick with salt and gorse. Pure bliss, that simple stuff—reminded me how we adults overcomplicate everything, rushing about when a muddy walk does the trick.

Afternoons were for ambling to Penclawdd, three miles off, grabbing fresh bread and cheese from the indie shops, maybe a cockle pasty from one of the eateries. Back at the cottage, chaos reigned in the best way: board games turning into pillow fights, the annexe becoming the kids' den for den-building with blankets. One evening, we barbecued on the patio overlooking the marshes, laughing as the dog stole a sausage mid-flip. I had this quiet moment watching the sun set, glass in hand, thinking, "Blimey, when did life get so hectic? This is what it's about—family, fresh air, no schedules."

We didn't stray far—Gower's an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, after all, with coast and country on the doorstep. Short drives to hidden coves for pebble-skipping, or just lounging with estuary views. The cottage life was gloriously unpolished: sandy towels everywhere, wellies by the door, that joyful disorder of shared spaces. No grand plans, just those little pleasures stacking up into memories. If you're after a relaxed family break, this neck of north Gower's hard to beat. We're already plotting a return.
