About Gower Peninsula
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Gower Peninsula – that narrow, twisting road from Swansea had me gripping the wheel like my life depended on it, especially after I took a wrong turn and ended up in a muddy farm track, cursing my sat-nav under my breath. A cheeky sheep just stared at me as if to say, “Tourist, eh?” But once I shook off the frustration, the anticipation built – visions of sandy beaches and proper Welsh seaside vibes had me grinning like a kid at Christmas.

Pulling into Port Eynon, right in the heart of one of Gower’s prettiest villages, I was bowled over. There it was: this quaint, attractive holiday cottage, just a stone’s throw from the award-winning beach. It screamed cosy charm – think well-presented kitchen with a 5-ring induction hob, coffee machine, and range cooker begging for a fry-up, comfy bedrooms that wrapped you up like a hug, and outside, a beautifully planted garden with a shaded patio and wooden pergola housing a 6-person hot tub (worth every penny of that extra £150, let me tell you). First impressions? Spot on. I dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and stepped out to the sound of waves crashing.

What turned the stay into pure magic, though, were the characters. First up was Dai, the local fisherman I bumped into on the beach path the very next morning. He was this wiry bloke in wellies, hauling crab pots, with a face like a weathered map of the coast. “New ‘ere, are ya?” he grinned, eyeing my pasty English accent. Over a natter about the best spots for paddling (Rhossili Bay’s just up the way, but he swore by the hidden coves near here), he slipped me a tip: “Catch the low tide at Mewslade – seals might pop by if you’re quiet.” I did, and blimey, he wasn’t kidding. We ended up sharing a flask of tea on the sand, him regaling me with tales of storms that “nearly swept the pub away back in ’89”. Proper yarn-spinner, Dai.

Then there was Mrs Evans from the village shop – a bustling widow in her seventies with a laugh like a foghorn and stories for days. I popped in for milk and came out with fresh scones, clotted cream, and a full rundown on Port Eynon’s quirks. “Mind the ghosts at the old lifeboat house,” she winked, “but they’re friendly ones – just lost fishermen looking for a cuppa.” We got chatting about the coastal paths, and she insisted I try the cliff walk to Overton Mere. “Take a stick, love – gulls’ll have your chips otherwise!” Her humour had me in stitches; I left feeling like I’d known her forever.

Evenings were for cosy-ing up by the open fire with a film, but the real highlight was the hot tub under the stars, bubbling away while I reflected on it all. Sat there, pint in hand, I had one of those gentle moments – you know, pondering how a daft wrong turn led to these quirky souls making my holiday. Gower’s not just beaches; it’s the people, the chats that stick with you. If you’re after that, pack your bags for Port Eynon. You won’t regret it.
