About Gower Peninsula
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Gower Peninsula – that classic British road trip where everything starts so promisingly until the sat-nav decides to have a laugh. We’d left Swansea early, buzzing with anticipation for our beachfront apartment on Caswell Bay’s golden sands, but halfway there, a sudden downpour turned the M4 into a watery skidpan. I gripped the wheel like my life depended on it, while the kids in the back cheered every splashy puddle we hit. By the time we rolled up, soaked but grinning, the clouds were parting just enough to reveal those sweeping views over the bay. First impressions? Magic. The place was newly spruced up, all cosy with subtle coastal vibes – think soft blues and whites that made you feel instantly on holiday. Waking up to waves crashing on the rocks below? Pure bliss.

We’d planned epic hikes from the off, lacing up our boots the moment we unpacked. Caswell Bay’s right on the doorstep, so day one was a gentle stroll along the sands at low tide, dodging jellyfish and skim stones till our arms ached. The weather held – rare for Gower – with that fresh sea breeze whipping our hair about. But oh, the British weather, eh? By afternoon, it flipped like a moody teenager. Grey skies rolled in, and what was meant to be a sunny amble up to Bishopston Valley turned into a proper drenching. We huddled under a flimsy tree, laughing as rain hammered down, me muttering about packing better gear next time. Self-reflection moment: I’m always the optimist who bins the waterproofs to save space. Rookie error.

Undeterred, we waited it out and pushed on the next day when the sun peeked back. The coastal path from Caswell to Langland Bay is a cracker – about two miles of undulating cliffs, wildflowers nodding in the wind, and those mesmerising horizon views that make you forget the world. We spotted seals lounging on the rocks (or were they just rocks? Kids swore they were seals), and the bunk bedroom crew – my two lads – raced ahead, turning it into a treasure hunt for driftwood. High tide that evening meant waves thundering right below our windows, turning dinner into a front-row show.

Midway through, another weather curveball: mist cloaked everything for our planned trek towards Brandy Cove. Plans B and C kicked in – a shorter loop around the bay, splashing through rock pools instead. Turned out better; we found a hidden cove perfect for pebble-skipping comps, and I even won one (don’t tell the kids I cheated with a flatter stone). Gower’s paths are brilliant for this – rugged enough for adventure, but family-friendly if you stick close.

By week’s end, we’d clocked miles of hikes, from cliff-top gales to surprise sunbursts, all without straying far. That apartment was the perfect perch – superking bed for the grown-ups, bunks for the wild ones, and those views fuelling our weather-whipped walks. Gower’s got that raw, unpredictable charm; it’ll test your brollies but reward your soul. Can’t wait to go back – next time, with extra layers.
