About Gower Peninsula
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Gower Peninsula – our sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis just past Swansea, sending us on a detour through some narrow lanes that had me gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline. We ended up at a dead end with sheep staring us down, laughing at our city slicker ways. A quick U-turn and a bit of old-school map faffing later, we were back on track, hearts racing but buzzing with that holiday anticipation. The kids were chanting “beach, beach!” from the back, and as the road dipped towards Caswell Bay, those first glimpses of the sea had us all grinning like idiots.

Pulling up to our beachside apartment, right in a frontline spot with its own private access to the sand, I felt that proper holiday glow kick in. It’s a cosy 2-bedroom place that sleeps four comfortably – perfect for us lot – and the views over Caswell Bay are absolutely cracking, one of the finest on this glorious stretch of Welsh coast. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and the moment we stepped inside, it was love. Sun streaming through the windows, the bay sparkling below like it was showing off just for us. First impressions? Spot on. No faffing about with check-ins; we were straight into beach mode.

The next few days were pure relaxed family bliss, the kind of holiday where time just melts away. Mornings started with brekkie on the balcony, watching surfers catch waves while the kids demolished bowls of Weetabix. Then it was down the path to the beach – proper golden sand, not too crowded, ideal for building epic sandcastles that inevitably got flattened by the tide (and little brothers). We pottered about Caswell, paddling in the shallows, skim-stoning until our arms ached. One afternoon, we packed a picnic and wandered the short stroll to Brandy Cove, that hidden gem of a beach tucked away like a secret. The water was bracing – I yelped like a fool on the first dip – but nothing beats that post-swim sandy towel wrap-up.

Evenings were cottage life chaos at its finest: barbecues on the little patio with sausages charring just right, while I tried (and failed) to master the art of flipping them without mishap. We’d play board games till the kids conked out, then collapse on the sofa with a GandT, gazing at the sunset painting the bay in pinks and oranges. There was this one moment, watching my lot chase waves at dusk, when I had a proper think – you know, that gentle self-reflection bit. Amid the joyful pandemonium of family holidays, with sand in the bedsheets and endless “Muuuum!” calls, it hit me how these simple pleasures recharge the soul. No grand plans, just us, the sea, and a bit of Welsh magic.

We didn’t venture far – a quick jaunt to nearby Bishopston for ice creams, or a clifftop walk along the coastal path for those postcard views. It was all about that unhurried vibe, letting the Gower’s beauty do the heavy lifting. Packing up to leave felt brutal, but we drove off with sandy shoes and fuller hearts. If you’re after a chilled family break, this is the spot – pure, simple joy.
