About Gower Peninsula
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Gower Peninsula last August – proper summer holiday vibes, but with that classic British twist. We’d packed the car to the brim with beach gear, cool bags stuffed with picnic sarnies, and enough sun cream to slather a small army. The sat-nav was doing its thing, guiding us along the winding A-road from Swansea, when disaster struck: a massive tractor trundling along at snail’s pace, kicking up clouds of dust and turning our ETA into a vague hope. I was tapping the wheel, humming along to some indie playlist, while the kids in the back moaned about the heat. Half an hour late, but hey, it built the anticipation – by the time we rolled into Mumbles, I was buzzing to see what awaited.

Pulling up to this beautifully renovated ground-floor apartment in a grand old Victorian house, right in the heart of the seaside village, my first impressions were spot on. It felt like stepping into a cosy hug – light and airy, with big windows framing glimpses of the sea, and everything spotlessly modern inside. Perfect for a family getaway, and dead handy for nipping out to the local shops or grabbing a 99 from one of those brilliant ice cream parlours. The kids were straight out to the excellent play area just down the road, while I cracked open a cold drink on the patio, soaking in that late summer sun. You could feel the season in the air – warm days stretching long into balmy evenings, with the buzz of holidaymakers filling the pubs.

Gower in August is pure magic, all golden sands and gentle waves, and staying here let us make the most of it without a mad dash. A short stroll had us at Bracelet Bay, where the beach was alive with families building epic sandcastles under that relentless blue sky. We spent hours paddling in the shallows, the water surprisingly warm from weeks of sun, and laughed as I attempted (and failed) a bodyboarder’s wipeout – gentle self-reflection there: at my age, maybe stick to lilo lounging next time. Lunch at the beachside café in Langland Bay, just a mile up the road, was a highlight – fresh crab sandwiches and chips, eaten with sand between our toes, while the sea breeze kept the heat at bay.

Evenings were lazy perfection. We wandered Mumbles village as the sun dipped low, painting the sky in pinks and oranges – that seasonal glow that makes you forget the daily grind. Popped into a pub for fish and chips, the kids wolfing down ice creams that dripped faster than the conversation flowed. One night, we timed it just right for sunset at the pier, watching families and dog-walkers amble by, the air thick with salt and laughter. No need to venture far; Swansea’s marina was a quick four-mile hop if we fancied, but honestly, why bother when paradise was on our doorstep?

The summer warmth shaped every bit of it – those long, light days meant more beach time, more barbecues on the patio, more of that carefree feeling you only get when the weather plays ball. Sure, there were a few showers that sent us scarpering for cover, giggling like kids ourselves, but they passed quick, leaving rainbows over the bay. Packing up to leave, I felt a proper pang – Gower in summer had us hooked. If you’re chasing that ultimate seaside escape, this is the spot. Can’t wait to go back.
