About Gower Peninsula
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Gower Peninsula – one of those classic British holidays where everything starts with a cheeky detour. We’d piled into the car from Cardiff, kids buzzing in the back with crisps and iPads, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. Naturally, we missed the turn for Mumbles and ended up in some random village lane, arguing over whether the cow staring at us was judging our map-reading skills. A quick U-turn, a bit of laughter, and suddenly we were there, hearts lifting as the sea sparkled into view. I’d been buzzing with anticipation all week – visions of lazy beach days and no alarm clocks – and the first glimpse of the coast didn’t disappoint. It felt like we’d stumbled into a proper postcard.

Pulling up to our ground-floor flat, right in the thick of Mumbles, we were gobsmacked. It’s this stylish little number, dead posh but cosy, kitted out for up to four of us with sea views that make you forget the world. Modern vibes inside – think plush sofas, a slick kitchen, and those thoughtful touches like fluffy towels and a Nespresso machine that had me grinning like an idiot. Perfect spot for a family unwind, just a stone’s throw from the beach without feeling overrun.

First morning, we wandered down to Bracelet Bay, not five minutes away, dodging rock pools and letting the littluns hunt for crabs. The chaos kicked in proper when our youngest decided to ‘surf’ on a bodyboard in knee-deep water and ended up soaked head to toe – cue me playing human towel while trying not to laugh. Cottage life, eh? It’s all about those simple joys: brewing tea on the balcony as the waves crashed below, watching seals bob about in the bay. Afternoons were for ambling along Mumbles Pier, grabbing fish and chips from the village chippy – proper greasy, salty heaven wrapped in paper – then back to the flat for board games that descended into giggles and mild cheating accusations.

One evening, we hit Langland Bay for a gentle walk at golden hour. The kids built epic sandcastles while I flopped on the beach with a book, feeling that rare holiday calm wash over me. I caught myself reflecting – amid the sand-in-everything madness and the odd toddler tantrum, it hit me how these scrappy moments are the real magic. No grand plans, just us lot pottering about, breathing in that salty air, forgetting the daily grind. We even squeezed in a cream tea at a nearby café, scones so crumbly they were a total mess, but who cares?

By the end of the week, we were proper hooked on Gower’s easy rhythm – those hidden coves like Caswell Bay for pebble-skipping, evening paddles in the shallows, and collapsing back at the flat knackered but chuffed. It’s the kind of break that reminds you family holidays aren’t about perfection; they’re about the joyful disorder, the sea views that recharge your soul, and coming home with sandy shoes and fuller hearts. Can’t wait to go back.
