About Gower Peninsula
We’d barely left the M4 when the satnav decided to have a little laugh at our expense. One minute we were following the A4118 towards the Gower, the next we’d taken a wrong turning down a lane so narrow the hedgerows were practically brushing both wing mirrors. By the time we found the turning for the 2 Bed Cottage near the beach we were already twenty minutes late and slightly hysterical. The key was meant to be under a flowerpot by the blue door, but of course it wasn’t; we spent a comical five minutes lifting every pot in sight until a neighbour wandered over with it in her hand, grinning.

Inside, the cottage felt instantly welcoming—low ceilings, a wood burner already laid, and that faint smell of sea air drifting through the open window. We dumped our bags, made a quick cuppa, and decided to stretch our legs before it got dark. The plan was simply to follow the coastal path a little way, but within minutes we’d veered off onto a half-hidden track that led between bracken and gorse.

We ended up in a tiny cove we’d never have spotted from the main road. The tide was out, revealing a stretch of damp sand scattered with shells and the odd piece of driftwood. Two locals were quietly stacking stones into little cairns; they nodded hello but didn’t seem surprised to see strangers. We stayed until the light began to fade, then realised we’d completely lost our bearings trying to retrace the path.

After a few wrong turns through a quiet field we stumbled across an old stone stile half-buried in ivy. Beyond it lay a narrow lane that somehow brought us back almost to the cottage garden gate. The whole walk had taken less than an hour, yet it felt like we’d discovered a pocket of the peninsula that belonged only to us.

Back at the cottage we lit the fire, cooked something simple, and sat with the door open listening to the waves. It struck me how easy it is, when you stop rushing, to let a place reveal itself in its own time.
