About Gower Peninsula
The owner had left the door unlocked as promised, and stepping inside felt like walking into someone else’s Sunday afternoon. There was a faint smell of toast and sea air, the sort of homely mix that makes you drop your bags without thinking. Upstairs, the four bedrooms were already made up with crisp sheets and extra blankets folded at the foot of each bed; downstairs, the open-plan living room had squashy sofas angled towards both the telly and the big window that framed the bay. We didn’t unpack straight away. Instead we wandered the hundred-odd steps to the beach path, shoes kicked off, toes testing how cold the water still was in late spring. The tide was out, leaving wide, damp sand perfect for the littlest one to draw wobbly stick figures with a bit of driftwood. Back at the cottage the kettle had just boiled when we returned, and we stood in the kitchen with mugs in hand, watching the light slide across the garden wall. Later, once the cases were finally upstairs, we realised we’d forgotten half the snacks we’d meant to bring. A quick dash along the village high street solved that; the corner shop had everything from crumpets to local fudge, and the woman behind the till gave us a knowing smile when we admitted it was our first night. Back in the cottage kitchen we toasted whatever we’d bought, then carried the plates out to the bench as the streetlights flickered on. Sitting there, listening to the soft hush of waves we couldn’t quite see, I caught myself wondering why we don’t do this sort of nothing more often. The cottage didn’t need to entertain us; it simply let us arrive, settle, and remember how good that can feel. |
