We set off from Swansea with the usual mix of excitement and mild panic over whether we’d packed enough teabags, only to realise halfway down the lane that someone (definitely not me) had left the key in the ignition of the hire car while nipping into the shop for milk. By the time we’d sorted that out and found the turning for the cottage, the sun was already high and the sea air had that proper salty edge you only get on the Gower.

The moment we stepped inside 6 Bed Cottage, the day seemed to slow right down. Sunlight poured through the big windows onto the wooden floors, and the faint smell of toast from a previous guest lingered like a welcome. We dumped our bags, made a quick cuppa, and wandered straight out the back gate toward the dunes. The beach was only a short stroll away, and the tide was out far enough to leave wide stretches of damp sand perfect for barefoot wandering.

We didn’t do much that first afternoon, and that felt like the whole point. I spread a blanket near the rocks, cracked open a paperback I’d been meaning to finish for months, and let the pages flutter in the breeze while the others skimmed stones. Every so often a dog would trot past with its owner in tow, both looking equally content. The cottage itself seemed designed for exactly this kind of nothing; the kitchen opened straight onto a little patio where we could sit with our feet up, mugs in hand, watching the light change on the water.

Later we strolled back up the path for a late lunch of whatever we’d grabbed from the village shop—crusty bread, a wedge of cheese, and some tomatoes that tasted sweeter than they had any right to. Nobody suggested a plan. The afternoon stretched out like warm taffy, and before we knew it the sun was dipping low enough to need jumpers. I caught myself checking my phone out of habit, then slipped it back into my pocket without unlocking it. It was the first time in ages I’d gone a whole hour without wondering what I was missing.

By evening the cottage felt like ours already. We left the doors open to let the last of the day drift in, cooked something simple on the hob, and ate at the big table with the windows framing the darkening sky. Outside, the waves kept their steady rhythm, and inside we kept conversation light—mostly about whether tomorrow would involve another blanket on the sand or simply moving the blanket to a different patch of grass. Either way, it didn’t matter. The mishap with the car keys already felt like ancient history, and the real discovery was how little we needed beyond sunshine, a good book, and the quiet company of people who were happy doing exactly the same nothing.
