About Gower Peninsula
The relief was instant. We tumbled out stiff-legged, the salt air hitting us like a reset button, and the short scramble down the path to the beach felt almost ceremonial. The tide was out, the sand still damp and patterned with worm casts, and a couple of dog-walkers nodded hello as if we already belonged. Back at the cottage the key was exactly where the host had promised, under the boot scraper, and the door swung open onto a cosy living space that smelled faintly of woodsmoke and fresh linen. We kicked off our shoes without discussion, toes meeting the cool floorboards while the kettle we’d filled on autopilot began its familiar rattle. From the front window you could just see the edge of the dunes and the glint of the estuary beyond; it felt closer than any photo had suggested. I wandered into the little kitchen, still half in travel mode, and managed to bang my shin on the low step that leads to the utility room. Nothing dramatic, just enough to make me hop and swear softly while my partner tried, and failed, to hide a smile. It was the sort of tiny domestic moment that somehow made the place feel ours already. We didn’t unpack properly, just dragged the cool-bag inside and left the rest in the boot. Instead we took two mismatched mugs of tea down to the low wall at the end of the garden and sat watching the light slide off the water. A pair of oystercatchers skittered along the shoreline, their calls carrying on the breeze, and for the first time all day my shoulders dropped. The long drive already felt like a story we’d tell later rather than something still lodged in our muscles. I caught myself wondering how often we actually stop like this, properly stop, without the next plan already queuing up. The cottage didn’t demand anything grand from us; it simply offered a quiet corner where the sea did most of the talking. Tomorrow we might wander further along the coast path or poke around the little shops in Burry Port, but right now the only itinerary that mattered was finishing these mugs before the gulls got too interested. |
