About Gower Peninsula
Pulling up to this cosy detached house, I was chuffed to bits – off-road parking for two cars (handy with my mate's wagon in tow), and it welcomed our three daft dogs without a fuss. Uninterrupted sea views from the lounge? Dreamy. Stepping inside, the kitchen hit me first, all bright and kitted out like it was begging me to get cooking. Utility room next door with a washer, dryer, and extra fridges – perfect for muddy paws and post-beach sandy towels. We dumped the bags and cracked on with lunch straight away. I'd stopped at a farm shop just a couple of miles back for local sausages, fresh eggs, and Gower tomatoes that tasted like summer. Whipped up a massive fry-up in that heart-of-the-home kitchen: sausages sizzling, eggs sunny-side up, doorstep toast slathered in butter. The dining room table seated us all comfy, and we scoffed it overlooking the sea, dogs hoovering up scraps underfoot. Proper feast to kick things off. Evenings revolved around pubs within easy striking distance. First night, we ambled to the King Arthur in Reynoldston, about three miles over – classic Welsh local with beams (well, you know the vibe) and pints of Brains that went down a treat. Their lamb shank was melt-in-the-mouth, served with mash and gravy that could make you weep. I had the fish pie, packed with smoked haddock and prawns straight from the bay. We laughed about my earlier driving drama over sticky toffee pudding, the dogs sprawled out dreaming of bones. Next day, I fancied playing chef again. Nipped to the market in Swansea (just scraping under five miles, mind), grabbing Gower cockles, cockle bread, and artisan cheeses. Back home, attempted a seafood linguine – garlic, chilli, a splash of white wine from the offie. It was a right mess at first; pasta clumped like I'd never boiled water before. Laughing at my own rubbishness in the mirror, I thought, blimey, when did I get so out of practice at this? Proper moment of reflection over a glass of red – life's too short for shop-bought rubbish. Turned out decent in the end, wolfed down in the lounge with the telly on and views turning golden. Couldn't resist the Blue Anchor in Mumbles either, a short drive for crab sandwiches and chips that crunch just right, washed down with Gower Gold ale. Breakfasts were my highlight though – fresh crab from local boats, scrambled with herbs from the garden plot outside. One morning, we even baked Welsh cakes on the hob, getting competitive over who flipped best. Failed spectacularly on the last batch, but who cares? It was all about that joy of messing about in the kitchen, bellies full, dogs content, sea calling. Left feeling stuffed and sorted – Gower's a foodie haven if you make the effort. Can't wait to go back for more. |
