About Gower Peninsula
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Gower Peninsula – or rather, the bit just before Burry Port where we took a wrong turn and ended up in a narrow lane with sheep eyeing us suspiciously from the hedges. Me, behind the wheel, swearing under my breath (well, muttering, anyway), while my partner laughed and fiddled with the satnav. “It’s an adventure!” she said, as we reversed past a farmer who gave us a cheery wave. By the time we arrived, hearts racing a tad, the anticipation had built up nicely – we’d been dreaming of ditching the daily grind for some proper Welsh coast downtime, just the two of us pretending we’re still young and fancy-free.

Pulling up to this semi-detached cottage right in the heart of Burry Port, our first impressions were spot on. It’s the sort of homely base with neutral interiors and bright, airy rooms that makes you kick off your shoes and flop down immediately. The sitting room welcomed us with those soft-touch sofas gathered round the telly, and a cheeky splash of green that lifted the whole vibe – perfect for cosy evenings bingeing our shows. Suited us down to the ground, really, even if we’d booked it thinking of family trips past.

First morning, we wandered out for a gentle stroll to the beach, barely five minutes away, with the sea breeze whipping up that salty tang you can’t beat. Burry Port’s got this unpretentious charm – the harbour’s full of fishing boats bobbing about, and we grabbed coffees from a little café overlooking the marina, watching seals pop up like nosy neighbours. No grand plans, just ambling along the coastal path towards Pembrey, where the dunes stretch out like nature’s own playground. We paddled in the shallows, me yelping at the cold like a right wally, her giggling as she splashed me back. Simple pleasures, eh? That chaotic cottage life kicked in too – trying to cook a full Welsh breakfast in the compact kitchen led to a minor smoke alarm fiasco, but we laughed it off with tea and toast instead.

Afternoons were for pottering: popping into town for pasties from the bakery, browsing the independent shops for quirky souvenirs, or just lounging in the garden with a book as the sun dipped low. One evening, we caught the sunset over the estuary from a bench by the shore, fish and chips in hand from the local takeaway – greasy perfection wrapped in paper. No kids meant we could stretch out on those sofas guilt-free, but I did have a quiet moment reflecting on how we’ve let life get a bit hectic lately. Holidays like this remind you it’s the little things – a shared cuppa, a daft mishap – that recharge the batteries.

By the end of our stay, we were proper smitten with the Gower’s relaxed rhythm. Burry Port’s spot-on for couples craving that cottage chaos without the hassle, all wrapped in coastal bliss. We’re already plotting a return – next time, maybe with a picnic hamper and zero wrong turns.
