About Gower Peninsula
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Gower Peninsula last month – sat nav insisting we take some winding back lane that turned into a proper muddy track after a sudden downpour. We ended up with the car caked in muck, me laughing nervously while my other half pretended it was all part of the adventure. But as we crested the hill into North Gower, the clouds parted just enough to reveal those endless open skies and rolling countryside, and suddenly it felt like we’d stumbled into a postcard. Heart lifting, we pulled up to this beautifully designed reverse-level holiday home tucked away in the peaceful grounds of Gower Retreats. First impressions? Spot on – refined yet dead relaxed, like it was built for folk who just want to switch off.

From the off, it was all about doing bugger all, and I mean that in the best way. No grand plans, no ticking off bucket lists. Just us, the garden, and the sheer joy of slowing right down. That first afternoon, after scraping the worst of the mud off our boots, we flopped into the comfy outdoor chairs overlooking the lawn. The garden’s a proper haven – wildflowers nodding in the breeze, birds flitting about, and not a soul in sight. I cracked open a book I’d been meaning to read for ages (some daft crime thriller that had me chuckling at the plot holes), while we sipped tea that somehow tasted better out there. The property’s layout is genius too – living spaces up top to make the most of the views, so every glance out the window pulls you back into that Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty bubble.

Lazy days blurred into one another like that. Mornings started slow: potter out for a gentle wander around the grounds, breathing in the salty air drifting up from the coast just down the way. We’d spot rabbits hopping about or hear the distant call of gulls from nearby Rhossili Bay, but never felt the urge to dash off. Instead, it was back to the garden for lounging – me with my feet up, lost in another chapter, occasionally stirring to make a cuppa or nibble on some Welsh cakes we’d picked up locally. Lunch was effortless: cheese board from the nearby farm shop, eaten picnic-style on a blanket. Afternoons melted away with naps in the hammock (well, I tried reading there once and ended up dozing off mid-page – classic me).

There was this one evening, sat watching the sun dip behind the hills, pint in hand, when it hit me. Life’s always rushing – work emails pinging at all hours, that nagging to-do list. Here, in this indulgent little hideaway, I caught myself properly unwinding. No guilt, just contentment. A gentle nudge that maybe doing less is the real luxury. We did venture out once or twice – a meander along the cliffs at Oxwich, feet in the sand – but even those felt unhurried, like bonus moments. Mostly, though, it was the cottage rhythm: garden chats, page-turning marathons, and stars popping out overhead at night.

Packing up felt bittersweet, but driving off those muddy lanes (cleaner this time), I knew we’d be back. Gower’s got that magic for recharging the soul without lifting a finger. Pure bliss.
