About Llandudno
I’ll never forget the drive up to Llandudno – or rather, the bit just before Rhos-on-Sea, where we hit a proper Welsh downpour that turned the A55 into a skating rink. Me and Sarah, my other half, were belting out some old Oasis tunes to keep spirits high, but then the sat-nav decided to chuck a wobbly and reroute us through a maze of narrow lanes. We ended up doing a three-point turn in a puddle the size of Lake Windermere, laughing our heads off as the windscreen wipers battled for their lives. Still, by the time we pulled up, soaked but grinning, the anticipation had us buzzing – a few days away from the daily grind, just us two in this cracking period detached villa we’d booked.

First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on. Nestled in Rhos-on-Sea, this beauty had that classic seaside villa vibe – all welcoming and cosy, with an enclosed garden begging for a bit of lounging, a games room for a laugh, and a hot tub that promised pure bliss after a day out. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of fizz, and just soaked it in. No kids this time, mind – just a relaxed couple’s break, trading school runs for sea breezes.

Next morning, we wandered down to the beach, just a short stroll away. Rhos-on-Sea’s promenade is proper idyllic, with the waves lapping and families building sandcastles. We grabbed fish and chips from one of the eateries – crispy batter, mushy peas, the works – and plonked ourselves on a bench, watching paddleboarders wobble about on the water. Felt like proper holiday mode. Later, we hired bikes and cycled along the coastal path towards Colwyn Bay, stopping for ice creams that dripped faster than the seagulls could swoop. There’s something dead simple about that – no itinerary, just pedalling and chatting about nothing.

Afternoons were for the villa’s charms. That hot tub became our best mate; bubbling away in the garden while the sun dipped low, sipping local Conway ale from one of the nearby pubs we’d popped into. The games room got a workout too – a daft game of table football turned competitive quick, with me accusing Sarah of cheating when she walloped me 10-2. Cottage life chaos at its finest, but the good kind that leaves you in stitches.

We did venture a tad further one day, hopping in the car to Llandudno, only four miles up the road. Strolled the longest pier in Wales, pierrots belting out tunes, then ducked into Venue Cymru for a matinee show – light-hearted stuff that had us chuckling. Back in Rhos, we hit up the cafes for cream teas and browsed independent shops for quirky souvenirs. Even squeezed in a gentle walk around the Welsh Mountain Zoo – those rhinos eyeing us like we were the exhibits.

One evening, feet up in the garden, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life’s mad rush sometimes, innit? Work emails piling up, endless to-do lists. Here, with the sea humming in the background and Sarah’s hand in mine, it hit me – these simple pleasures, the mishaps and the me-time, they’re what recharge the batteries. No grand adventures needed, just this unhurried vibe. We left feeling lighter, already plotting the next getaway. If you’re after a chilled-out Welsh coastal escape, this corner of the world delivers in spades.
