About Llandudno
Pulling up to the apartment, I was chuffed to bits with the first impressions. It's one of those beautiful spots reached by a set of stairs, right on the water's edge, perfect for nosing about the coast and chatting with the locals about their traditions. Inside, it's cosy as anything, with furnishings that just invite you to flop down after a day out. The sitting room views are phenomenal – you could stare at the bay for hours, especially come evening with a glass of wine as the sun dips. Food was the absolute star of the stay, mind. First morning, I wandered down to Llandudno's high street market – what a gem! Stalls groaning under fresh crab from the Menai Strait, plump cockles, and bara brith that was still warm from someone's oven. I grabbed a punnet of mussels and some local cheeses, feeling like a proper forager. Back at the flat, I had a bash at cooking them up – steamed with garlic, white wine, and a handful of parsley I'd nicked from a herb pot outside. Not bad for a city lad, though I did set off the smoke alarm once or twice. Laughable, really; my other half reckons I should stick to takeaways, but where's the fun in that? Evenings were pub perfection. The King's Head down the road does a cracking Sunday roast – lamb so tender it fell off the bone, with Yorkshire puds the size of hubcaps and gravy that tasted like it was made by angels. We holed up there after a gentle stroll along the pier, supping a pint of Conway Brewery's Welsh Pride while the landlady regaled us with tales of the old smuggling days. Proper atmosphere, all wooden benches and locals nursing their halves. Another night, we hit the Cottage Loaf for fish pie – creamy, packed with haddock and prawns, served with mushy peas that took me right back to childhood holidays. I even tried my hand at a full Welsh breakfast one morning: laverbread (that salty seaweed mush – love it or hate it), cockles, bacon from a nearby farm stall, and eggs from the market. Cooked it all in the apartment's neat little kitchen, windows open to the sea breeze. Managed not to burn the toast this time, which is progress. It got me reflecting, sat there on the sofa with the sunset painting the bay gold, plate of homemade cawl (lamb stew with leeks – nailed it after watching a YouTube tutorial) in my lap. In the rush of daily life, I forget how a simple holiday like this resets you – good grub, cracking views, and no rush. Llandudno's got that magic for foodies; markets bursting with coastal bounty, pubs dishing up heartwarming plates, and a kitchen that tempts you to have a go yourself. Can't wait to go back and tackle a crab feast next time. |
