We’d barely left the A55 when the satnav decided we were taking the scenic route via a farm track that ended in a gate and a very unimpressed sheep. By the time we reversed out and found the actual lane to the cottage in Llysfaen, the October light was already turning that soft, silvery grey that only happens when the sea and the sky can’t quite decide who’s in charge.

The cottage sat just back from the road, a neat little stone place with a slate roof and a wooden gate that squeaked like it had been practising. We’d picked it for the beach being a short stroll away and, more importantly, for the log burner that the photos had promised. Stepping inside, the first thing that hit was the faint smell of woodsmoke already lingering from previous guests; someone had left a small stack of logs in the basket and a note about the best chippy in Llandudno, which felt like the sort of practical kindness you only get in Wales in autumn.

Outside the front window the garden sloped gently towards the coast path, and beyond that the sea looked properly moody, the sort of slate-blue that makes you reach for an extra jumper without thinking. We’d arrived on one of those crisp, bright days that sometimes appear between the autumn storms, so we dumped the bags, made tea in mismatched mugs, and wandered down to the beach before the light went. The tide was out far enough to leave wide, damp sand perfect for aimless wandering, and the air carried that clean, salty edge that seems sharper once the summer crowds have gone.

Back at the cottage we lit the fire on the second attempt—turns out the knack is not to overthink the kindling—and sat with our feet up while rain began to patter against the windows. It felt oddly luxurious to be warm and dry while the weather did its thing outside, and I caught myself thinking how rarely we actually stop like this. Usually we’re rushing to fit everything in; here the season itself seemed to be saying slow down, there’s nowhere else you need to be.

Later we walked into Llandudno for fish and chips, the pier lights already glowing against the early dusk. The cottage felt like a proper bolthole when we got back, the sort of place where the kettle is always just boiled and the sofa has that lived-in dip in the middle. As the fire settled into a low glow I realised the best part of the trip so far hadn’t been any particular sight or plan, but simply arriving when the days were shortening and letting the weather set the pace.
