About Llandudno
We’d barely made it past the outskirts of Llandudno when the satnav decided the scenic route was the one that ended in a dead-end car park behind a row of shuttered beach huts. By the time we’d turned around and found Spinnaker House, the children were convinced we’d been driving in circles for hours, and I was pretending the extra loop had been “part of the fun.” The front door key was tucked under the usual plant pot, and the moment we stepped inside the low-ceilinged sitting room, the faint smell of sea air and slightly damp sand told us we were properly on holiday.

Spinnaker House sits just a short stroll from the sweep of Llandudno’s North Shore, the sort of place where you can hear the tide turning if you leave the bedroom window open. The kitchen was small but perfectly stocked with mismatched mugs and a kettle that whistled like an old steam train, and the children immediately claimed the squishy sofa as their own before we’d even unpacked the car. Outside, the garden path led straight onto the promenade, so within minutes we were trailing buckets and spades down to the beach, shoes already kicked off and socks stuffed into pockets.

The first evening felt wonderfully ordinary. We bought fish and chips from the kiosk at the end of the pier and ate them sitting on the low wall opposite the cottage, watching the lights come on along the front. Later, back indoors, we played a battered game of Scrabble by the electric fire while rain tapped the windows, and nobody minded that half the tiles were missing. It was that kind of stay—the kind where plans unravel and nobody really cares.

I caught myself, halfway through buttering toast the next morning, realising how rarely we slow down like this at home. There’s always another email, another school run, another thing that feels urgent until you’re standing in a cottage kitchen with sand on the floor and nothing that absolutely has to be done before lunch. Spinnaker House didn’t offer anything fancy, just the simple rhythm of beach walks, damp towels on the radiator, and the occasional cup of tea that went cold because someone wanted to show you a shell they’d found. And somehow that felt like exactly enough.
