I’d been on the road for nearly five hours when the satnav cheerfully announced we’d arrived, only for us to discover we’d pulled up outside the wrong cottage entirely. The neighbour, bless him, was very polite about it, but there’s nothing quite like reversing a car full of damp beach towels and half-eaten snacks while trying not to look like you’ve just gate-crashed someone’s afternoon. By the time we finally found The Railway Cottage, tucked just back from Llandudno’s sweeping promenade, I was equal parts relieved and faintly ridiculous.

The cottage itself felt instantly welcoming. Painted a cheerful cream with a neat slate roof, it sits in that quiet pocket between the main road and the beach, close enough to hear the odd seagull but far enough that you don’t get the full tourist bustle. The front step was already scattered with a few grains of sand someone had tracked home the day before, and that small detail somehow made the whole place feel properly lived-in rather than just rented.

Stepping inside, the first thing that struck me was how the light moved. Big sash windows let in that soft, silvery Welsh seaside light, bouncing off pale walls and making the little living room seem bigger than it was. There was a faint smell of toast and sea air, as if the previous guests had only just left. The kitchen was compact but perfectly sensible—no fancy gadgets, just a kettle that boiled in seconds and a fridge already stocked with milk, which felt like a small but thoughtful touch.

We dumped our bags and wandered straight out again, drawn by the promise of the beach. It’s only a short stroll down the road, past a row of pastel guest houses and the familiar red-and-white striped huts that line Llandudno’s front. The tide was out, leaving wide, damp sand perfect for aimless wandering. I found myself standing there with my shoes in one hand, watching a family fly a bright red kite that kept dive-bombing the waves, and thinking how strange it was that after hours of traffic and one minor navigational embarrassment, this was all it took to feel properly on holiday.

Back at the cottage, I sat on the little bench outside with a cup of tea going cold in my hands. The journey already felt like a distant memory, replaced by that gentle, slightly sheepish feeling you get when you realise you’ve been wound up about nothing. The neighbour’s cheerful wave as he passed with his dog suggested our earlier mix-up had already become local folklore, and I couldn’t help smiling. Sometimes the smallest mishaps are exactly what you need to arrive properly.
