About Llandudno
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday cottage near Llandudno – or rather, the comedy of errors that got us there. We’d piled into the car from Manchester with the dog, bags stuffed with snacks, and me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. Halfway through the twisty lanes towards the Conway Valley, we hit a sheep traffic jam. Dozens of the woolly nuisances blocking the road, with a farmer herding them at snail’s pace. I wound down the window for a photo, only for our spaniel to lunge and nearly topple my coffee all over the dashboard. Laugh? We were in stitches, but starving by the time we finally arrived.

Pulling up to this dog-friendly cottage that sleeps five, tucked into the quiet edge of the Bodnant Estate, I was buzzing with anticipation – open views west across the Conway Valley to Eryri’s peaks, two patio areas (one for dining, one for lounging), and a private hot tub right there with the valley stretching out. Best bit? Round-the-clock access to a heated indoor pool shared with just one neighbour. First impressions? Magic. Sun dipping low, that fresh Welsh air, and us already plotting supper.

Food became our holiday rhythm, honestly. We kicked off with a rummage through the well-stocked kitchen – nothing fancy, but it had everything for a proper home-cooked feast. First night, I fancied myself a chef, grabbing local treats from the village shop in nearby Eglwysbach: plump sausages from the butcher, crumbly Welsh cheeses, and a loaf of bara brith-spotted bread. I attempted a Conway Valley fry-up on the hob – bacon sizzling, eggs poached just right – but managed to slightly char the tomatoes. The others ribbed me mercilessly, but paired with a bottle of local craft cider from the fridge, it tasted like heaven on the dining patio as the sun set.

Next day, we mooched over to Bodnant Garden, just three miles away – not for the blooms (though stunning), but their excellent tearoom. We demolished cream teas: scones still warm, clotted cream thicker than my accent, and strawberry jam that screamed summer. Lunch was at a cosy pub in the valley, The Groes in St George’s – proper pub grub, think slow-cooked lamb shank with minty mash and buttered veg, washed down with a pint of Brains. Our pup curled up by the fire while we tucked in; dog-friendly spots like that are gold.

Evenings were hot tub heaven, bubbling away with valley views, but always centred on meals. One night, I braved a Welsh rarebit experiment – melted caerphilly on doorstep toast, with leeks from a nearby farm stall. Came out gooey perfection, served with pickled onions and a crisp salad. Another, we hit the farmers’ market in Llanrwst (a quick hop), loading up on smoked salmon, artisan breads, and homemade chutneys. Back at the cottage, we grilled mackerel fillets on the patio barbie – flaky, fresh, with lemon wedges – and it felt dead posh.

Reflecting on it now, amid the laughs and minor kitchen disasters, it hit me: holidays like this aren’t about perfection, but savouring simple joys like a shared plate and a full belly. We ate like kings, pub-hopping to The Queens Head in Eglwysbach for fish and chips one blustery eve (crispiest batter ever), and never once felt short-changed. If you’re after a foodie escape with cracking views and no pretension, this corner of North Wales delivers. We’re already plotting a return – next time, I’m delegating the cooking!
