About Llandudno
I’ll never forget the drive up to Llandudno – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Manchester turned into a proper comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car with the kids, the dog, and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to have a midlife crisis just past Colwyn Bay. It kept rerouting us down these tiny lanes that looked like they hadn’t seen daylight since the Victorians, and then – bang – we got stuck behind a sheep farmer’s tractor doing about 5mph. By the time we finally spotted the sea glinting in the distance, I was clutching the wheel like it was my last lifeline, humming along to the radio to stop myself from losing it. The kids were bickering over the last packet of crisps, and the dog was whining for a wee. Pure holiday magic, right?

But oh, pulling up to the cottage? That first glimpse made it all worthwhile. Tucked away in a sweet spot in Llandudno, just a hop, skip and jump from a handy little shop, a cosy pub, and the beach – I mean, talk about location, location, location. We had off-road parking for three cars (handy with the in-laws tagging along), plus free roadside spots if needed, and it felt like we’d stumbled into our own little coastal hideaway. The place had this welcoming vibe straight off – think classic seaside charm without any fuss, perfect for our ragtag crew including the dog, who immediately claimed the rug as his throne.

Stepping inside after that chaotic arrival, I let out a massive sigh of relief. The first impressions were spot on: everything just felt right, from the comfy setup that screamed “relax here” to the views teasing the waves crashing nearby. We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and within minutes the kids were out the door, racing to the beach with buckets in hand. That first paddle in the Irish Sea? Chilly as anything, but their squeals of delight were pure gold. We wandered down to the prom, grabbing fish and chips from a proper no-nonsense chippie – vinegar dripping everywhere, the works – and watched the pier lights flicker on as the sun dipped low. Llandudno’s got that unpretentious buzz: trams rattling by, families strolling, and the Great Orme looming like a friendly giant in the background.

Later, we ambled to the pub for a pint – nothing fancy, just locals chatting about the weather and the latest rugby drama. The dog curled up under the table, utterly chuffed. Me? I had a quiet moment on the cottage steps that evening, staring out at the darkening sea, thinking how these little holidays are what stitch us back together. Amid the arrival pandemonium – the lost keys (mine, naturally), the overflowing boot, the “are we there yet?” chorus – it hit me: mishaps and all, this is the good stuff. Sometimes you need a bit of chaos to appreciate the calm. We ended up staying put more than we planned, just soaking it in, with Eryri’s edges whispering promises of a gentle hike the next day. If you’re after a base that feels like home but with sand between your toes, this corner of Llandudno delivers every time.
