About Mid Wales
I set off from Cardiff bright and early, buzzing with that holiday anticipation—you know, the kind where you're already picturing lazy mornings with a cuppa and no alarm clock. But typical me, I took a wrong turn just outside the city centre, ending up in a queue of traffic that had me tapping the wheel like a drum kit. Twenty minutes later, I finally spotted the signs for the Vale of Glamorgan, and there it was: this cracking 5-star first-floor holiday apartment on a sprawling 20-acre estate. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight—cosy, modern vibes with everything you need, tucked away in stunning rural peace but with two cracking local pubs practically on the doorstep. Cardiff's just seven miles down the road, so you get the best of both worlds.

No sooner had I unpacked than hunger hit. The apartment's kitchen was a dream—spotless, well-stocked with pots and pans that screamed "get cooking." I fancied myself a proper chef, so I nipped to the nearby local market in the Vale, just a short drive away. It's one of those proper farmers' markets, full of stalls groaning under fresh veg, artisan cheeses, and plump Welsh lamb. I grabbed some leeks (gotta do the leeks, right?), a loaf of bara brith-spotted bread, and a wedge of caerphilly that could make you weep. Back at the flat, I attempted a hearty cawl stew—mutton, spuds, the works. Let's just say it simmered away nicely, but I overseasoned it a tad. Still, scoffed with a pint from the fridge (they'd stocked local brews), it tasted like victory. Sat by the window watching the estate's fields, I had a proper moment of self-reflection: when was the last time I cooked without rushing? This place was forcing me to slow down, and I was here for it.

Evenings were all about those pubs. The first one, a stone's throw from the estate, does the best fish and chips I've had in ages—crisp batter, mushy peas on point, and a cheeky side of curry sauce. We (me and my other half) chatted with locals over a round of Brains SA, swapping stories about hidden gems in the Vale. The next night, the second pub won us over with its Sunday roast—juicy roast beef, Yorkshire puds like clouds, and gravy that could cure a bad day. Portions were massive; I waddled home giggling about how I'd need to walk it off tomorrow.

Mornings meant brekkie experiments: black pudding from the market fried up with eggs, or just toast slathered in local marmalade while planning the day. One afternoon, we hit a pop-up food stall near the estate—proper street food with hog roast baps that were pure heaven, dripping with apple sauce. No need for Cardiff's buzz when you've got this lot on your plate.

Honestly, it was the food that made it. That mishap on the drive? Forgotten amid the feasts. If you're after a spot to eat like a king, pub-crawl like a local, and maybe laugh at your own kitchen disasters, this is your spot. I'll be back for more—stomach permitting.
