About Mid Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to Merthyr Tydfil last month – me, the wife, our two little ones, and the dog crammed into the car with enough snacks to last a siege. We’d been buzzing with that holiday anticipation, you know, windows down, singing along to the radio, dreaming of cosy evenings in. But about halfway there, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our lane was prime grazing spot, and we ended up in a five-minute standoff with the farmer, who was lovely but firm about his woolly escapee. Classic Wales, eh? We laughed it off, though my youngest declared it the “best adventure ever” before we’d even arrived.

Pulling up to the place, my heart did a little flip – it looked just perfect, this bright and inviting first-floor apartment smack in the heart of Merthyr Tydfil. From the outside, it promised that homely vibe we craved, and stepping inside didn’t disappoint. The open layout was spot on for our ragtag crew: kitchen fully kitted out with oven, hob, fridge, the lot, so we could whip up beans on toast without drama. The sofa called to us immediately, telly ready for kids’ cartoons, and WiFi humming along nicely for a quick scroll through family pics. It felt like our own little Welsh bolthole, welcoming solo travellers, couples, or families like ours with pets in tow.

First impressions? Pure gold. We dumped the bags and headed straight out for a gentle wander around town – Merthyr’s got that unpretentious charm, with quirky shops and a real community buzz. The kids were in heaven chasing each other in the Cyfarthfa Park playground, while we grabbed ice creams and watched the world go by. That evening, we self-catered a feast of pasta (slightly overcooked, thanks to my “chef” skills), piled on the sofa with the dog sprawled across our laps, and binged a film. Bliss.

The next day summed up the relaxed family break we needed. A short stroll took us to the Brecon Beacons foothills – nothing too strenuous, just easy trails with views that make you stop and breathe. We picnicked by a babbling stream, the littles splashing about while I reflected on how these simple moments recharge you. Work stress? What work stress? Back at the flat, chaos ensued: muddy boots everywhere, the dog stealing toast off the side. I had one of those gentle “aha” moments, chuckling to myself – holidays aren’t about perfection; they’re this glorious mess of laughter, full tummies, and zero schedules.

We pottered to the local markets too, picking up fresh bread and cheese, chatting with stallholders who knew everyone’s business (in the best way). Evenings blurred into board games, the odd Merthyr curry takeaway, and stargazing from the window. No grand plans, just cottage life magic amid the valleys. Driving home, sheep-free this time, I was already plotting our return. If you’re after a stress-free base to unwind in Mid Wales, this spot nails it – pure, unfiltered family joy.
