The dog splashed about like a loon while we watched families picnicking, and I had one of those quiet moments, sitting on a bench thinking how I need more of this – less rushing about, more breathing in the fresh air. No epic hikes into the Beacons proper (we saved that for day two, keeping it local), but the castle grounds nearby were magic for a lazy afternoon, history seeping out without any effort.

Staying central like this was genius for us lot – solo travellers, couples, or even if you’re on a work stint nearby. It’s comfy without being flashy, and that convenience meant we packed more laughs into fewer miles. Sure, the arrival was chaos, but it set the tone: holidays aren’t perfect, and that’s half the fun.
