About Mid Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to Merthyr Tydfil last month – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from the Midlands turned into a comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers, rerouting us through some godforsaken B-road that twisted like a hungover snake, and just as we neared the high street, I misjudged a one-way system and ended up in a dead-end car park, arguing with my other half about whose fault it was. “You always trust the bloody thing too much,” she said (well, something like that). By the time we’d U-turned and parked up – after circling the block twice like amateurs – we were both knackered, laughing at our own daftness, but buzzing with that holiday anticipation. What if the place was a tip? What if we’d ballsed up the booking?

Pulling up to this bright little studio apartment right in the heart of the high street, though, all that melted away. First impressions? Spot on. It’s one of those smart, open-plan setups that just screams practical holiday bliss – no faffing about with stairs or corridors, just step in and feel at home. Pet-friendly too, which was a godsend for our mad spaniel, who’d been cooped up in the boot yapping at every sheep we passed. The kitchen hit me first: oven, hob, microwave, the lot – toaster and kettle primed for that essential first cuppa. We dumped the bags and cracked open a brew while the dog sniffed every inch like he owned the place. Living area’s a proper unwind zone, with a telly, music player, and cracking WiFi to sort out tomorrow’s plans or binge a bit of telly.

That messy arrival made the whole stay feel even sweeter, like earning a treat after a daft detour. We wandered out five minutes later to the buzz of the high street – grabbed fish and chips from a chippy round the corner, proper greasy goodness that hit the spot. Next morning, a gentle stroll to Cyfarthfa Park, just a hop away, with its massive lake and woodland paths begging for a mooch. The dog splashed about like a loon while we watched families picnicking, and I had one of those quiet moments, sitting on a bench thinking how I need more of this – less rushing about, more breathing in the fresh air. No epic hikes into the Beacons proper (we saved that for day two, keeping it local), but the castle grounds nearby were magic for a lazy afternoon, history seeping out without any effort.

Staying central like this was genius for us lot – solo travellers, couples, or even if you’re on a work stint nearby. It’s comfy without being flashy, and that convenience meant we packed more laughs into fewer miles. Sure, the arrival was chaos, but it set the tone: holidays aren’t perfect, and that’s half the fun. If you’re after a no-nonsense base in Merthyr, this is your spot – go on, treat yourself.
