Pontyclun, a charming village in Rhondda Cynon Taf, evolved from a 20-acre farm into a bustling Victorian industrial town thanks to iron ore, coal mining, and the South Wales Railway. Now it draws visitors worldwide with excellent rail links, shops, and eateries from pubs to Indian takeaways. Stroll through Ivor Woods and along the River Ely, or drive to Cardiff for its Gothic castle, bay, and vibrant Central Market. About Mid Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to that cracking holiday spot in Pontyclun – we’d packed the car to the gunnels with welly boots, board games, and enough crisps to feed an army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour down a muddy farm track. There I was, white-knuckling the wheel, while my mate Dave in the passenger seat reckoned we were starring in our own episode of a Welsh version of The Great Escape. A quick reverse manoeuvre (and a lot of laughing) got us back on track, and by the time we rolled up, my heart was doing that excited flip you get when you know something special’s waiting.

Pulling into the drive, with space for four cars no bother, I was buzzing – the waterfall feature right there was like nature’s own welcome party, tumbling away merrily. Stepping inside this high-end lodge felt like being hugged by luxury: that massive open-plan living space with its top-notch kitchen (oven, hob, microwave, the lot, plus a dishwasher to save our sanity) opened straight into a dining area for 12 and squidgy sofas begging for a Netflix binge. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and cracked open a few tins, already plotting the week.

But honestly, the real magic wasn’t the plush setup – it was the characters we bumped into around Pontyclun and nearby. Take old Geraint, the chap at the village shop not five minutes away. He’s got this wild beard like a hedge that’s seen better days, and when I asked about local walks, he launched into a yarn about spotting otters by the River Taff. “Mind the sheep, mind,” he winked, “they’ve got attitudes bigger than the Black Mountains.” We ended up chatting for half an hour about his days in the local rugby club – proper banter, him ribbing me for my southern accent like I’d just landed from Mars.

Then there was Mrs. Evans from the tearoom down the lane, a tiny dynamo with glasses perched on her nose and stories for days. Over a cream tea (clotted, naturally), she regaled us with tales of the annual Pontyclun show – scarecrows dressed as celebrities, ferret races, the works. “You lot staying at that fancy place with the waterfall?” she asked, eyes twinkling. “Best keep the windows shut at night; the owls hoot like they’re auditioning for a horror flick.” We howled with laughter, and she slipped us a map scribbled with her secret picnic spots along the Clydach River.

Even the bloke walking his dog by the Cluniad – that’s the local name for the river round here, apparently – stopped for a natter. “Fancy a pint at the Red Lion later?” he grinned, his labrador eyeing our pasties hopefully. We did, and it turned into an evening of darts, local ales, and him schooling us on why Pontyclun’s got the best chippy in Rhondda Cynon Taf. “It’s the vinegar,” he confided sagely.

Looking back, amid all the cosy lodge nights – cooking up feasts for the massive table, sprawling on those sofas with the Smart TV flickering – it was these quirky locals who made it unforgettable. They pulled us right into the heart of Mid Wales life, no pretence, just proper warmth. Made me reflect a bit, you know? In our rush-a-day world, it’s chats like that which recharge the batteries. If you’re after a getaway that feels like coming home to a bunch of eccentric mates, this is it. We’re already plotting a return.
