About Mid Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to Mid Wales – we’d packed the car with enough tea bags and biscuits to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Cardiff. It insisted on taking us down some winding B-road that felt more like a sheep’s personal runway, complete with a sudden downpour that turned the windscreen into a Jackson Pollock. Me and Sarah were laughing by then, windows steaming up, arguing over whether to trust the phone or the faded Ordnance Survey map I’d dug out from the glovebox. Classic us, turning a two-hour jaunt into a four-hour adventure.

But oh, when we finally pulled up, all that faded away. The cottage was this gorgeous contemporary spot, all sleek lines and cosy nooks, tucked into the rolling countryside of Bridgend with the coast just a whisper away. First impressions? Spot on. It screamed tranquil escape – perfect for us lot who fancy a bit of walking and cycling without the crowds. We tumbled out, bags everywhere, and Sarah gasped at the view: green hills rolling on forever, a cheeky breeze carrying the sea’s tang. I felt that proper holiday buzz, you know, the one where your shoulders drop and you think, “Yeah, this is it.”

We’d come for a chilled couple’s break, no kids or chaos beyond our own brand of cottage life mayhem. First morning, I tried whipping up a full Welsh breakfast – laverbread and all – but managed to set off the smoke alarm with the bacon. Sarah found me flapping a tea towel at it, grinning like an idiot. “You’re a liability, love,” she said, but then we sat on the patio with our cups of builder’s tea, watching the mist lift off the fields. Simple pleasures, innit? That’s what this place nails.

We ambled out for gentle walks along the coastal paths nearby – think rugged cliffs, gulls wheeling overhead, and not a soul in sight bar the odd dog-walker. One afternoon, we hired bikes from a local spot and pootled along quiet lanes, stopping for picnic sarnies by a babbling brook. Pure bliss, with Sarah snapping photos on her phone while I pretended to be David Attenborough narrating the cows. “And here we see the majestic bovine, pondering life’s mysteries…” Laughter echoed for miles.

Evenings were for kicking back: wood-burner crackling (no faffing with kindling, thank goodness), a bottle of plonk, and board games that always descended into accusations of cheating. One night, over a homemade curry that actually didn’t involve the fire brigade, I had a proper moment of reflection. Sat there with Sarah, her feet in my lap, I thought about how we’d let work gobble us up lately. This cottage, with its peaceful vibe and those nearby trails begging to be explored, reminded me why we do these getaways. It’s not about ticking off attractions – though the buzz of a local rugby match down the road was tempting – it’s the chaos of burnt toast, shared giggles, and just breathing easy.

We left with fuller hearts and a promise to return. Mid Wales has that magic – unpretentious, restorative, and utterly ours for those few days. If you’re after a laid-back reset, hunt down a gem like this. You won’t regret it.
