About Newport
I’ll never forget the drive down to Newport in Wales for our holiday – satnav decided to play silly buggers just outside Cardiff, sending us on a daft detour through some narrow lanes that had me gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline. We ended up in a muddy farm track, laughing our heads off as the car spluttered through a flock of bemused sheep. But honestly, that little mishap was the perfect teaser; by the time we pulled up opposite the Celtic Manor Resort, my heart was racing with that buzzy anticipation of a proper getaway. And blimey, first impressions? Spot on. This spacious, sophisticated holiday home on the outskirts of Caerleon felt like a warm hug – modern vibes with all the comforts, and that complimentary 9-hole adventure golf course right there on-site was calling our names from the off.

We wasted no time diving into the discounted hotel facilities for a splash in the pool, but it was the hidden gems we stumbled upon by accident that turned the trip into pure magic. Caerleon, just two miles away, is only a short hop, but we took the long way round one morning, getting gloriously lost along the River Usk’s winding banks. What started as a wrong turn led us to this tucked-away spot where the water glides past ancient willows, otters darting about like they owned the place. No crowds, just us, a thermos of tea, and the gentle burble of the river – a proper off-the-beaten-track find that made me reflect on how we’re always rushing, aren’t we? I sat there thinking, why don’t I make more time for these quiet moments?

Newport’s only 5.5 miles down the road, but instead of the high street, our wandering took us to some secret lanes in Caerleon itself. We accidentally veered off the main path and found the back entrance to the Roman Baths – not the touristy front, but a shady corner where you can almost hear the echoes of legionaries splashing about 2,000 years ago. It was eerie and brilliant, especially with the National Roman Legion Museum just a stroll away. Popped in there after, noses pressed to the glass cases full of pottery and armour, feeling like proper Indiana Joneses without the fedora.

The real joy was in the getting lost bit. One afternoon, aiming for a simple riverside walk, we ended up on these overgrown trails fringed by wild garlic, stumbling across a forgotten picnic spot with views over the Usk that could’ve been painted. Light humour in the chaos, mind – my other half reckoned I’d navigated us into Narnia, complete with a cheeky robin as our guide. We even snuck in that adventure golf round at dusk, giggling over missed putts while the sun dipped low.

Looking back, it’s the serendipity of those accidental discoveries that lingers – the rural South Wales retreat that rewarded our meanderings with peace and surprises. If you fancy ditching the map for a bit, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
