About Newport
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot near Newport on the Isle of Wight – we’d loaded up the car with kids, snacks, and enough beach gear to sink a ferry, only for the sat-nav to chuck us down a narrow lane that turned into a muddy quagmire after a sneaky shower. There I was, white-knuckling the wheel, while my other half yelled “reverse, reverse!” and the little ones chanted “are we there yet?” like a broken record. A classic family road trip mishap, but honestly, it had us in stitches by the end.

Pulling up to the place felt like arriving in a proper rural idyll. This charming little studio was tucked away on a sprawling 50-acre estate, surrounded by rolling fields and that fresh country air you can almost taste. First impressions? Spot on. It had this cosy, welcoming vibe – think snug setup perfect for kicking back after a day out, with the equestrian centre just a stone’s throw away, a cracking family restaurant and bar on site, and playgrounds that had the kids whooping before we’d even unpacked. Farm animals from the riding school wandered about, adding to the charm – our youngest was besotted with the ponies right off the bat.

We couldn’t wait to settle in, and it didn’t disappoint. Mornings kicked off with lazy brekkies at the estate’s bar, where the portions were generous and the coffee strong enough to wake the dead. The chaos of cottage life soon took over – sand everywhere from Ryde Beach (just six miles down the road), wet wellies by the door after splashing in puddles, and epic games of hide-and-seek that somehow involved the chickens. It was gloriously messy, the kind of holiday where you embrace the madness instead of fighting it.

The real joy was in those simple pleasures. We’d wander the level paths along old railway lines, hand-in-hand with the kids, spotting butterflies and breathing easy. Monkey Haven and Butterfly World, literally half a mile away, were daily pilgrimages – watching those cheeky monkeys swing about had us all howling, and the butterfly house felt like stepping into a living kaleidoscope. Osborne House, only four miles off, was a treat for a posh afternoon out, strolling the gardens and pretending we were Victorian toffs. Evenings? Picnics by the playgrounds or a gentle trot around the equestrian trails – nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite for the restaurant’s fish and chips.

Looking back, I had one of those quiet moments of self-reflection on the last day, sat on the studio’s step with a cuppa, watching the sun dip over the fields. In the rush of daily life back home, we forget how restorative these unhurried spots are – the laughter, the minor disasters, the pure, uncomplicated family time. It’s made me vow to ditch the spreadsheets and chase more of this cottage chaos. If you’re after a relaxed break on the Isle of Wight, this neck of the woods near Newport delivers every time. We’re already plotting a return.
