About Newport
I’ll never forget the drive down to Newport in Pembrokeshire last autumn – the leaves were just starting to turn that glorious coppery gold, carpeting the winding roads like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and my partner had been buzzing with anticipation for weeks, dreaming of cosy nights in with the sea on our doorstep. But typical me, I took a wrong turn just outside Fishguard, ending up on some narrow lane that had me white-knuckling the steering wheel as golden foliage whipped past the windows. We laughed it off in the end, though – nothing like a daft detour to crank up the holiday vibe.

By the time we rolled up, the late afternoon sun was dipping low, painting everything in that soft, amber glow you only get in October. We parked in the off-road spot right by this neatly presented apartment, perched high up with those jaw-dropping sea views stretching out across the coastline. It’s a single-storey spot, perfect for us two (and our scruffy terrier, who was already twitching his nose at the salty air). A quick tromp down a flight of steps – with the outlook unfolding bit by bit, rolling greens fading into sand, sea, and endless sky – and we were there, tucked away in our little coastal haven. First impressions? Spot on. The open-plan layout felt like a warm hug after the drive, especially with that chill in the air hinting at winter’s approach.

Autumn shaped every minute of our stay, turning what could’ve been a standard break into something properly magical. Mornings kicked off with steaming mugs of tea on the balcony, watching mist roll in off the waves while the cliffs glowed rusty red. We’d wander down to Newport Sands, just a short stroll away, where the beach was near-empty – no summer crowds, just us, the dog, and heaps of driftwood scattered like treasures. The sea was that moody slate grey, crashing in with a proper Welsh roar, and the air nipped just enough to make you feel alive. One day, we crunched through fallen leaves along the coastal path towards Traeth Mawr, spotting seals bobbing about in the bay. It was brisk, mind, but layering up with scarves and wellies made it all the more fun – like the season was daring us to get out there.

Evenings were pure bliss, wrapped up against the gathering dusk. We’d cook simple suppers – think hearty stews bubbling away – while the sun set in a fiery display over the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. One night, a gentle rain pattered on the windows, turning the whole place into a den of contentment; we lit candles and played board games till late, the dog snoring by the fire. No rushing about, just that slow, seasonal rhythm.

Looking back, I reckon autumn’s my favourite for spots like this. It strips away the frenzy, leaves you with the bones of the coast – raw, beautiful, and honest. Made me reflect on how we pack too much into life sometimes; a week here taught me to savour the quiet bits. If you’re after a proper unwind, chase those golden days down Newport way. You won’t regret it.
