About Newport
I’ll never forget the drive to Newport – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Cardiff turned into a comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us down some narrow Pembrokeshire lane that had more potholes than a dodgy council estate. We ended up with the car bottoming out on a rogue bump, spilling my wife’s posh lattes all over the passenger footwell. “Brilliant,” she sighed, mopping up the mess with a service station napkin. Me? I was already buzzing with that holiday anticipation – visions of salty sea air and cracking walks, even as I wrestled the wheel past a flock of sheep eyeing us like we’d gatecrashed their party.

By the time we rolled into Newport, caffeine withdrawal was kicking in, but the town’s unhurried vibe hit us like a warm hug. Those indie shops and cosy cafés lining the high street promised lazy browses and cream teas, and Newport Beach was just a hop away, its sands calling for a proper paddle. We finally found the place – private parking spot waiting like a VIP slot – and tumbled out, knackered but grinning. This beautifully restored 18th-century cottage is a proper gem, blending that old-school historic charm with sleek open-plan living that feels dead luxurious without trying too hard. Stepping inside, my first thought was, “Crikey, we’ve stumbled into someone’s dream pad.”

The wood-burning stove was begging for a log or two, artisan Welsh furnishings gave it that authentic touch – think comfy armchairs you sink into – and the Juliet balcony? Sea views that make you forget the sat-nav fiasco entirely. It’s spotless, 5-star clean, and so handy for everything: a quick stroll to the coastal path for those epic cliff walks, or nipping into town for fish and chips at the local. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of fizz on that balcony, watching the waves crash as the sun dipped low. First impressions? Bloody marvellous – or rather, absolutely spot on.

That evening, we wandered down to the beach, toes in the sand, dodging the odd jellyfish like pros. Dinner was at one of the quayside spots – fresh seafood that tasted like it leapt straight from the sea. Back at the cottage, I stoked the stove, and we flopped in front of a film, the kind of simple bliss you can’t buy. But here’s a quiet moment of self-reflection: amid the chaos of the drive, I realised how often I bulldoze through life at full pelt. This place forced me to slow down, breathe in the coast, and just *be*. No signal stress, no emails – pure reset.

Next morning, we hit the coastal path early, that bracing wind whipping up as gulls wheeled overhead. Newport’s got this magic pull – families building sandcastles, couples ambling hand-in-hand, and us lot feeling like we’d won the holiday lottery. It’s the ideal bolthole for a pair like us, or even with kids in tow. If you’re after high-end escape without the pretension, right in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park’s sweet spot, this is it. Mishaps and all, it was the perfect start – already plotting our return.
