About Newport
I finally made it to Newport after what felt like the longest drive from Cardiff, cursing under my breath when the sat-nav decided to send us down a narrow lane that turned into a proper muddle of puddles. We'd packed too many snacks, as usual, and one bag toppled over, spilling crisps everywhere just as we hit a pothole. Still, by the time we rolled up to this luxurious Newport cottage, all on one ground floor and spot-on for our family of four, the frustration melted away. From the moment we stepped inside, it was love at first sight – those wonderful views from the kitchen and sitting room straight out to the open countryside had me grinning like an idiot.

We'd been buzzing with anticipation on the journey, imagining coastal walks and pub lunches, but honestly? The real joy turned out to be doing bugger all. It was like the cottage whispered, "Slow down, mate," and we listened. The first morning, I brewed a massive pot of tea in that brilliantly equipped kitchen, the kind with every gadget you didn't know you needed, and we just sat there, mugs in hand, watching sheep amble across the fields. No rush, no plans – pure bliss.

The enclosed garden sealed the deal. It's this delightful spot, perfect for alfresco dining, with a table that begged for lazy lunches. We'd fire up the barbecue (after I'd faffed about with the coals for ages, naturally), slap on some sausages and corn on the cob, and eat while the sun dipped low. The kids – well, teens now, but still kids – sprawled on blankets with their books, and I cracked open a battered copy of a Philip Pullman novel I'd been meaning to revisit for years. Mealtimes stretched into afternoons of nattering about nothing much, the countryside humming softly around us.

One afternoon, I caught myself just staring at the sky, a glass of local cider fizzing away, and had this gentle moment of reflection: when did life get so frantic? Back home, it's emails and deadlines, but here in the cottage, with its two cosy bedrooms and family bathroom that somehow always had hot water at the ready, time just... expanded. I felt properly unplugged, recharging without even trying. The husband dozed in the sitting room armchair, book slipping off his lap, and I chuckled to myself – we're all getting on a bit, aren't we? But it was lovely, that shared sloth.

Evenings were for board games in the sitting room, fairy lights twinkling in the garden as dusk fell, or simply reading by the window as stars popped out over the fields. No big adventures needed; a quick wander to Newport's high street for pasties from the bakery or ice creams from the café down the road was plenty. We'd wave at locals who all seemed to know each other, picking up that easy Welsh warmth.

By the end of the week, packing up felt like a chore. This Newport cottage was our perfect bubble of laziness – who knew doing so little could feel so grand? If you're after a family holiday where the highlight is breathing easy, book it. You won't regret it.
