About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot near Beguildy in Powys – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Knighton turned into a right faff with the sat-nav losing its marbles. We’d been buzzing with anticipation, windows down, singing along to some dodgy 90s playlist, dreaming of kicking back in the hills. But no, halfway there, the thing decided to route us down a single-track lane that was more puddle than path after a sneaky overnight shower. Mud everywhere! I’m gingerly inching the car forward, swearing under my breath (well, quietly, with the kids in the back), when – splat – we bottom out on a massive rut. Cue ten minutes of me and the wife pushing like lunatics while the little ones cheer from the sidelines. Heart racing, covered in muck, but laughing our socks off by the end. Proper British holiday start, that.

Finally, we roll up to this sumptuous modern attached barn conversion, and blimey, the first impressions hit like a warm hug. We pile out, still caked in mud, and there it is: jaw-dropping hill views stretching out like a postcard. I pause at the front door, taking one last gawp at the rolling green slopes before stepping inside, and it’s love at first sight. The stunning open-plan living area is an absolute dream – high-quality features everywhere you look, comfy leather seating plonked in front of the telly with a sleek modern electric fire flickering away invitingly. And the kitchen-dining bit? Well-equipped doesn’t even cover it; it’s got everything from a massive fridge to posh coffee gear, perfect for rustling up a fry-up or cracking open a bottle after a day out.

We dump the bags and beeline for the hot tub out back – outstanding views from there, too, with the hills glowing in the late sun. The kids are whooping, splashing about before we’ve even unpacked, and I’m sinking into a chair with a brew, thinking, ‘This is it, the proper unwind we needed.’ No five-star hotel pretensions, just pure, cosy bliss for a family getaway. That evening, we lounged in the living room, feet up, watching a film while the fire chased away any lingering chill. Dinner was simple – pasta from the stocked cupboards – but tasted like Michelin-star stuff with that view through the windows.

Looking back, that arrival chaos was the perfect icebreaker. Made us appreciate the calm inside even more. I caught myself reflecting over a nightcap: life’s too short for perfect plans; it’s the mishaps that make the memories. We spent the next days pottering around – a gentle stroll to Beguildy for village pub grub, messing about on the nearby Offa’s Dyke path, spotting sheep and buzzards. No grand adventures, just quality time in this incredible corner of North Wales. If you’re after a spot that ticks every box for relaxation with mates or family, this is your place. Already plotting a return – mud and all.
