About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to that little corner of North Wales – or rather, the comedy of errors that got us there. We’d set off from Shropshire full of beans, me navigating on my phone while my partner drove, both buzzing with that pre-holiday anticipation. You know the feeling: imagining cosy evenings ahead, no emails pinging, just us and some proper downtime. But then, halfway through, we hit a massive flock of sheep blocking the road near Machynlleth. Proper standstill, with a farmer herding them like it was a Sunday stroll. We sat there giggling for half an hour, windows down, chatting to the locals in the queue. Turned what could’ve been a frustration into the perfect icebreaker for our getaway.

By the time we rolled up, the sun was dipping low, casting this golden glow over the peaceful countryside near Aberystwyth. First impressions? Blimey, it was even better than the photos. This one-bed cottage was a perfect retreat for a romantic getaway in beautiful West Wales, all luxurious finishes and that private hot tub tucked away like a secret treat. We stepped inside, dropped our bags, and just breathed it all in – the quiet, the fresh air, the sheer luxury of having nowhere to be.

From that moment, the joy was in doing sod all, really. Lazy cottage days became our religion. Mornings started slow: I’d potter out to the garden with a cuppa, settling into a lounger with a dog-eared paperback – some mindless crime thriller I’d been saving. The garden itself was a dream, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, birds flitting about, and not a soul in sight. My partner would join me later, armed with her Kindle, and we’d read side by side for hours, only breaking to top up coffees or share a daft observation about the clouds.

Afternoons blurred into hot tub sessions. Sinking into those bubbling jets, book balanced on the edge, staring at the rolling hills – it was pure bliss. No grand plans, no hikes or tourist traps. We wandered the garden paths once or twice, spotting butterflies and listening to the distant sheep (ironic, after our roadblock), but mostly we just lounged. Evenings meant simple suppers – fresh bread from the local shop in Aberystwyth, a bit of cheese, maybe a bottle of wine – eaten on the patio as the sky turned pink.

There was this one gentle moment of self-reflection, staring into the hot tub steam one dusk. I realised how knackered I’d been from work, always rushing. Here, time stretched out; I wasn’t achieving anything, and it felt brilliant. No guilt, just contentment. We did pop into Aberystwyth for a seaside amble along the promenade one afternoon – chips in hand, waves crashing – but even that was low-key, back before dark to our bubble.

Honestly, it was the best sort of holiday: rediscovering the art of slowing down. If you’re after romance without the faff, this is your spot. We left feeling recharged, already plotting a return. Who knew doing nothing could feel so good?
