About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to that gorgeous couples retreat in North Wales – satnav on, tea thermos in hand, and me convinced we’d beat the traffic. Big mistake. About halfway through the Clwydian hills, we hit a sheep traffic jam. Dozens of the woolly buggers blocking the lane, with a farmer in wellies herding them like it was no big deal. We waited 20 minutes, laughing our socks off, while he waved us through with a cheeky grin and a “Mind the lambs, eh?” Classic North Wales welcome – chaotic but charming.

Pulling into the idyllic village spot just outside Corwen felt like stepping into a postcard. The property was this beautiful couples retreat, all cosy and tucked away, perfect for unwinding amid the dramatic countryside. First impressions? Spot on. Fresh air hit you like a tonic, Snowdonia looming invitingly in the distance, and that sense of anticipation bubbling up – what adventures awaited?

But honestly, the real magic was the quirky locals we met. They turned our stay into a proper character-driven yarn. First up was Dai at the village pub, a pint-sized powerhouse with a beard like a hedgehog and stories for days. Over a ploughman’s lunch, he regaled us with tales of the narrow-gauge railway nearby – “Trains so small, you feel like a giant, but they chug up to Bala Lake like nobody’s business. Seen otters there bigger than my dog!” We chuckled, and before we knew it, he’d sketched a route on a napkin for a gentle walk to some hidden river pools, insisting we spot the kingfishers. “They’re shy buggers, but patient folk like you’ll do fine.”

Then there was Mrs Evans from the craft shop in Betws-y-Coed, a 10-minute drive away. We popped in for souvenirs after a splash about at the waterfalls – she’s this whirlwind of a woman, 70 if a day, with woolly hats she knits herself and gossip sharper than her needles. “You staying at that retreat down the valley? Smart choice. My nephew kayaks the White Water Centre – says it’s wilder than his ex-wife!” We spent an hour chatting about her gallery of local art, her tips on fishing Bala Lake (“Worms from the garden, love, none of that fancy bait”), and how the historic bridges in Betws are “older than my aches.” Her warmth had us reflecting gently – in the rush of city life, we’d forgotten how a natter with proper characters recharges the soul.

Even the bloke at the National White Water Centre had us in stitches. Spotting us eyeing the rapids, he wandered over mid-lesson, helmet askew: “Fancy a go? Or just here for the view? Last lot of tourists capsized and blamed the sheep!” We stuck to spectating, but his banter about local climbing spots and hilltop lakes near Ruthin had us planning a return.

Those encounters – Dai’s napkin maps, Mrs Evans’ hats, the paddler’s quips – wove the holiday together more than any hike or vista. In that peaceful retreat, surrounded by Snowdonia’s pull and pretty villages, it hit me: sometimes the best memories aren’t the scenery, but the folk who make you feel right at home. Can’t wait to go back.
