About North Wales
Pulling into the 250-acre working farm felt like stepping into a proper Welsh idyll, though. The rain had eased just enough to reveal rolling hills and those endless footpaths snaking off into the mist-shrouded countryside. Our cottage sat there welcoming us, cosy and unpretentious, the kind of place that screams “kick off your boots and relax.” First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, spot on. We tumbled out of the car, bags flying everywhere, and there it was: a real gem tucked away but just a stone’s throw from Fairbourne village. The views from the windows alone had us grinning – unspoilt coast peeking through, with sheep dotted about like fluffy sentinels. We weren’t there five minutes before the chaos of arrival turned into pure joy. The kids dashed straight out to explore the farm tracks, while I finally got that kettle on. Popping down to the village later that afternoon – it’s only a quick hop – we hit the sandy beach at the far end, where a few locals were braving the waves on kayaks and windsurfboards. It looked tempting, but after our drive, we settled for fish and chips from one of the pubs and a wander along the shore, toes in the damp sand. The miniature steam railway chugged by in the distance, puffing away like something from a storybook, and we made a mental note for tomorrow. That evening, as we sprawled out with a board game and the sound of distant waves, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home’s non-stop – work, school runs, the usual grind – but here, amid the farm’s quiet rhythm, it all felt miles away. I caught myself thinking how daft it is not to do this more often; a bit of North Wales magic sorts you right out. Next morning, we were off on one of those myriad footpaths, huffing up to viewpoints over the coast, then down to the water taxi for a quick jaunt to Barmouth. The golf course tempted the other half for a round, but I stuck to beachcombing and eyeing up the surfers. Honestly, from that mishap-filled arrival to the lazy days that followed, it was the perfect reset. If you’re after proper Welsh countryside vibes with village perks on tap – pubs, shops, that cracking beach – this is the spot. We left buzzing to return, already plotting the next trip. Who knew a dodgy drive could lead to such a cracker of a holiday? |
